SCENE ONE Melody, Gary, Jenny, and Asha stand in a line. Its cold. They are bundled up.

The girls are wearing layers, which, really, is the best. Things found in used clothing stores or hand me downs. They look fashionable. Gary wears a Sears bought parka. They all sorta move in space, trying to keep warm. M ELODY I thought you said the doors opened at 6? ASHA Well, I was wrong, ok? M ELODY Im freezing. GARY I told you not to wear that. I bought you a coat to wear. M ELODY I look stupid in that coat. GARY You would be warm. M ELODY Cant we just, like, go to a bar or something? ASHA No. M ELODY Its FREEZING.

ASHA I heard you the first time. GARY Do you want me to get you a cup of coffee? M ELODY No. Ill go. Ill go. Anybody want anything? GARY 4 shot latte. M ELODY Seriously? Youll be up all night. GARY It was a long day at work, and I want to stay awake Neil. M ELODY You know, he plays loud. Its a rock band. Its loud. Youre not going to fall asleep. GARY Not if I have the coffee. M ELODY Im telling you: you dont need the coffee. GARY Just get me the coffee, just... would you just get me the coffee? M ELODY You dont NEED it-JENNY JUST GET HIM THE DAM N COFFEE. Everyone looks at Jenny. M ELODY Jenny. What the hell?

JENNY Just BUY HIM THE FUCKING COFFEE. Im tired of hearing you guys bicker. GARY Were not-JENNY Just go. Beat. Melody goes. GARY You didnt have to do that. JENNY Ill apologize later. Its just. No excuses, but, it was a shitty day at work. And. Yeah. Ill buy her a beer. Shell be fine. ASHA You should buy her two. JENNY Ill buy her two. When do they open the doors? ASHA Ill text M oore. She pulls out her phone and starts to text. GARY Wheres Doug? JENNY At home. ASHA At home? JENNY Yeah. Hes working on a story.

ASHA M oores band is playing. JENNY He knows that. GARY He should be here. JENNY I tried to convince him. But, you know how he is. When he wants to work, hes going to work. ASHA But the band-JENNY I KNOW. GARY M oores band only plays once a month. JENNY Gary, I know. But, we should all respect what Doug is trying to do. He has to sometimes sacrifice-ASHA I just wish it wasnt tonight. GARY Then I dont think it would be a sacrifice. Any other night. Its not really, you know, a sacrifice. He wouldnt give anything up. Asha and Jenny look at Gary. GARY Im just saying. ASHA We get it.

JENNY Hes working. Which is good. MOORE, hipster rocker guy, comes out. Not dressed for the weather. He comes up to Asha, they kiss. Its very passionate. ASHA Hey. Honey, arent you cold? M OORE Yeah, its freezing out here. I kinda dig it. Its like, refreshing. Its so like... hot under the stage lights. GARY You havent started, have you? M OORE No, man, but we have to do a soundcheck. GARY Right. M OORE Wheres Doug? JENNY Oh. M an. ASHA He cant make it, honey. JENNY Hes trying to finish a story. M OORE Right on. Thats cool. Hes fighting the good fight. Melody returns, one coffee in hand.

GARY Wheres my coffee? M ELODY They were out of espresso. A stand off. GARY You know, I could go and get my own. Melody shrugs. Gary doesnt go anywhere. M ELODY M oore, when are we getting in? M OORE Soon. Like. Soon. They just want to make sure the bar and everything is ready.
