The first time I heard about the task of not buying or using any non-Filipino products for a week made me feel a sense of excitement with a little bit of anxiousness. Many questions then came into my mind after hearing the task, like: Will I be able to do the task? Will I be able to survive a week of not buying or using such products? And what Filipino products will I use in substitute of those foreign-made products I used to buy and consume? July 28, 2011 was the start of the task and will end August 4, 2011. The day before the start of the task, I went to SM Supermarket to shop for products which will I use in substitute of the products I used to buy and consume which are foreign-made. While I was strolling around the supermarket, finding Filipino-made products, I saw that most of what was sold in the supermarket are products of multinational companies and there were only a few products which are Filipino-made. I could hardly distinguish which products are Filipino-made and which are not. Good thing I remembered that the barcodes of products made here in the Philippines starts with 480. I bought Hapee toothpaste in substitute of Colgate, Belo in substitute of Dove Moisturizing Soap, Angelina Loaf in substitute of Gardenia Loaf and Energen Cereal Drink in substitute of Nesvita Cereal Drink I can proudly say that 80% of the products I used/consumed for 1 week are Filipino made. There are some instances that we cant get rid of using non-Filipino products for there are no substitute products that are Filipino-made like personal care products, school supplies and etc. I was happy for I was able to surpass the task for the whole week even though I wasnt able to observe the task 100%. Upon trying the Filipino-made products I used in substitute for the foreign-made products, I came into a realization that our own products are way better compared to those products I used to consume. If all Filipinos will use and patronize Filipino-made products, we can help alleviate the economic situation of our country. Filipino Entrepreneurs will be encouraged to increase their production because of the increasing demands. Unemployed Rate will decrease for many Filipinos will have jobs because of the increasing demand for labor force. Small and medium Filipino Enterprises will have the opportunity to grow and expand their business. And poverty rate in our country will also decrease. These will all happen if most Filipinos will get rid of the colonial mentality habit. In order to change the country, we must start the change within ourselves. Let us start the change by patronizing our own products and taking pride of being a Filipino.
