The Justa (pronounced
 Hu-sta
) stove was developed through the coordinated ef-forts of the people of Central America, Trees, Water, and People, Rotary Interna-tional and Aprovecho Research Center Text: by Peter ScottIllustrations: by Tony Wiley, Brian Thomas and Ethan Hughes

The body of the Justa stove can be built with a variety of different ma-terials, such as cement, clay & sand, brick, adobe, or metal. This guideexplains how to construct the stove with brick but other plans areavailable to build the Justa with cement and metal.
The type of material (cement brick , adobe or metal)) that isused for the exterior stove body will not have a great im- pact on the performance of the stove. Special materialsare not needed for the stove
body
. The stove will functioneffectively as long as the bodyof the stove can support 5 potsand can withstand tempera-tures of up to 500 degreesFahrenheit. This cement Justa is being built byHelps International in the Guatema-lan Highlands. Three individual ce-ment pieces are cast in fiberglassmolds and then assembled on site. The molds are easy to transport and prevent design inconsistencies. This metal Justa with oven is be-ing constructed by Ahdesa inHonduras and by Prolena in Nica-ragua. The metal Justa is approx.30% more expensive but it al-lows for mass production andease of transport.

The Justa type stoves are built using principles that can be adapted to build astove to suit a particular cooking need. Because one stove design will not work in each community, we offer a number of stove models to choose from:
This stove is thesame as the origi-nal Justa stove yetit features 2 potsthat are sub-merged directlyinto the fire flow path. When usedwith 3 pots it is50% more effi-cient than theoriginal Justa. The single-potRocket stove isless expensiveand more effi-cient (25- 30%)than the JustaStove. It is idealfor cooking out-side or in areaswhere a chimneyis not needed or available.
THE ROCKET STOVETHE IMPROVED JUSTA STOVETHE ROCKET RING STOVE
With the ringsin place, mul-tiple pots or tortillas can becooked at thesame time. The rings canalso be re-moved for usewith individ-ual round bot-tom pots.

THE HAYBOX COOKER
The haybox works by retaining heatinside a layer of insulation such asstraw, wool or foam. The hayboxcan reduce fuelconsumption by70% and is simpleand inexpensive to build .
