version
of
the
T-54
to
be producedinany quantity is
shownhere.
It
had
a
new
turret
design
with

overhang.
Thisparticularearly series
T-54
is
seenbeing
transported
over
a
river
on
a
pair
of
tracked
GSP

turret
wasnearlyidenticalto
that
usedon the
T-34
/85tank,
but
wasthicker(
up
to 120mm

armour

did
not
havethegoose-neck
turret

and,
aftertrials, the
NKTP
authorised limited production tocommence
at
the re-opened
Zavod
Nr.75in
Kharkov.
Designeffort weretransferredto a teamheaded byN. Barykov,
and
some alterations were
made
in thedesign before
quantity
production finallystartedlater in theyear.
About
150or 200T
-448
weremanufactured beforethe
end
of
thewar,
and
theysawlimited
combat
in the final months
of
thefighting.
The
T-44
was one
of
themost
advanced
medium tanks toemergefrom the Second WorldWar.
It
combined extremely thick
armour
for itsmodest32-ton weight,
had
excellent ballisticprotection
and
goodmobility.
The
usual Achilles
+
heel
of
Soviet tankdesigns, thetransmission,proved troublesome in the initial production batches. Animprovedversion,the
T-44M
was introducedonthe assemblylinesafter the war, which correctedthese defects
and
introduced
other
improvementssuch as anew,widertrackwhich offered
better
flotation insoft soil
and
snow.
The
T-54MediUDl
Tank
The
maindrawback
of
the
T-44
wasits retention
of
the same
main
armament
as the T -34/85,the
ZIS
S-
5385
mm
tankgun.
This
weapon was
not
entirely
adequate
against
German
medium tanks like the
Panther,and
itwas evident
that
the
US
and
Britainweremoving towards heavier
armour
on theirnewmedium tankssuch asthe
M26
Pershing
and
theCenturion.
The
frontal
armour
of
thesetanks wastoothick to be penetratedeasilybythe
85mm
gun
at
longer
combat
ranges.
As
a result,in1945 aD
lo-T
gun was
mounted in
amodified
T-44
,knownas theT -44/100.
This
vehicleprovedsuccessfulin trials,
but
inthe meantime it was decided to developanew
turret
with awider
turret
ringwhich could
better
absorbthe recoil forces
of
thelargergun.
This
resulted inaprototype
of
the T -54 in 1946,
and
