The Externals of the Catholic Church
is a very useful resource and refer-ence, but it must be used with some caution. It was as accurate as Fr.Sullivan could make it in 1917, and he did well. But the Church has revisedher liturgical practices and issued a new Code of Canon Law. Some ofthe things described in this book are no longer the current practice of theChurch, or are no longer widespread. After some consideration, I decidednot to attempt to note these lest I miss one and given the mistaken impres-sion that it still stands. Therefore, although much of what was true abouttheexternalsoftheChurchin1917isstilltruetoday,thisbookshouldnotbetaken as an authoritative reference to the current practices of the Church.I do note in particular that much of the chapter concerning the marriagelaws of the Church (including the portion on the then-new marriage laws)is out-of-date.When in doubt,
ask a priest.
