Huntsville,Alabama.EARLY_SIGNSTUDIESBoeingwasawardedthe
Lunar
RovingVehicleassigmmentafteradesigncoupe-titioninwhichthefinalistswereBoeingandBendixCorporation,AnnArbor,Michigan.Bothorganizationshadconducteddesignstudies
on
severaltypesofspecializedspacecraftfortravelonthemoon'ssurfacebeforetheLRVconceptwasselectedforfurtherdevelopment.
The
twomosti_portantBoeingstudieswereMOLAB(Mobile
Lunar
Laboratory),196M-65andLSSM(LocalScientificSurveyModule),1966-67.Both
studies
wereconductedunderthedirection
of
theMarshallSpaceFlightCenter.TheMOLABstudyresultedinafat-wheeledvehiclethatwasmuchmorethanameans
of
transportation.
It
wasan
enclosed
travelinglaboratorycompletewithanatmosphere,foodand
equipment.
The
spacecraftwasdesignedtoberocketedtothelunarsurfaceinadvance
of
theastronautsbyamunmannedLMdescentstageandchecked
out
byremotecontrol,Each
of
itssixwheels_sind_vid_a%l!ypoweredandfivefeetindismeter.Topspeedwasabouti0milesperhour,similartothatofthe_V.Theelectric,

Page2poweredMOLABcouldsupporttwomenfortripsonthelunarsurfaceofuptotwoweeksand250milesdistance.LSSMwasanopenspacecraftdesignedfromthestandpointofweightsavingsanddependability.Alsoelectricpowered,itwaslittlemorethanaframe,seatandsixwheelswithwoven-wiretires.AlsowithaspeedofI0milesanhour,thiswide-trackedcraftwasdesignedtocarryonlyoneastronaut(twoinanemergency)onexplorationtripsoverthemoon'ssurfaceintheinterestofscience.

985-poundcraftcouldrangeover200squaremilesofmoonscape.SPACECRAFTON

actuallybeingdevelopedisdeceptiveinappearance.Itlookslikeasimple,familiarvehicle.Inrealityitisaspecializedspacecraftthat
has
beendesignedtofunctionsafelyinspaceconditionsofvacuum,widetem-peraturevariancesandoverdifficultterrain.Byaccidentoffunction,itturnsouttobeaspacecraftonwheels.Ithasbeenbuilttotheexactingspecificationsofall
Apollo
progr_hardware,andhasundergoneadevelopment,qualificationandacceptancetestproceduretoqualifyitasamannedspacecraft.
The
approximately_80-pound
I_nar
RovingVehiclewillprovidetransportationfortheastronauts,scientificequipmentandlunarsawplescollectedduringlunarexcursions.
The
driverwilloperatethevehiclemuchashewouldonEarth,usingahandcontrolsomewhatllkeanaircraftorspacecraft"stick"ratherthanasteeringwheel.
The
vehiclewillbeabletomoveforwardandbackwardatvariablespeeds.
RELIABILITY
AND
BACKUPSYST_4SFEATUREDReliabilityis
obtained
throughsimplicityinboth
design
andoperationandthroughredundancy.Forexample,therearetwocompletebatterysystems,eachsufficienttopowerthevehicle.
TheLunar
RovingVehicleisnormallysteeredbyboththefrontandrearwheels;
however,
ifonesteeringmechanismfails,itwillbedisconnectedandthevehiclecancompleteitsmissionusingonlytheremainingsteeringsystem.

Page3TheLunarRovingVehiclewillbeI0feet2incheslong,approximately6feetwideandhavea7½footwheelbase.Thefourwheelswillbeindividuallypoweredbyelectricmotors.Thevehiclewilltravelatspeedsuptoapproximatelyeightmilesanhouronarelativelysmoothsurface.SILVER-ZINCBATTERIESPOWERSPACECRAFTThevehicle'spowersourcewillbetwo36-voltsilver-zincbatteries.TheyarebeingdevelopedbyEaglePicherIndustries,ElectronicsDivision,Joplin,Missouri.Thesearenon-rechargeablebatteriesofplexiglassmonoblockconstruction.Silverzincplatesoperatinginpotassiumhydroxideelectrolyteareused.Eachbatteryisdesignedforac_pacityof121amperehoursandcontains25cells.Thecasematerialismagnesium.InstrumentsusedtomeasuretheamountofdischargeofelectricalpowerfromthestoragebatterieswillbesuppliedbyCurtisInstruments,Inc.,MountKisco,N.Y.Unlikethecharge/dlschargeindicatoronthedashboardofthestandardauto-mobile,theseinstruments,calledamperehourintegrators,willperformabook-keepingfunction.TheywillaccumulatethetotalamountofcurrentdrawnfromthebatteriesandrelaytheinformationtoadisplayconsolelocatedbetweentheseatsoftheRover.TheLRVwillbeabletocarryatotalweightof1,000pounds(earthweight)whichwillincludethetwoastronautsandtheirlifes_pportsystem(400poundsforeachmanandhisequipment)plus130poundsofscientificexperiments.Italsomustbeabletocarryupto70poundsoflunarsoilandrocksamples.Thisisovertwiceitsownweight.Incomparison,theaveragefamilyautomobilecancarryonlyabouthalfitsweight.Theoperationallifetimeofthelunarvehicleonthemoonwillbe78hoursduringthelunarday.Itwillbeabletomakeanynumberofsortiesuptoacumulativedistanceof40milesor65kilometers.Duetothelimitationsofthe-more-
