September Tuesday, September 6th through Friday, October 14th EMMA LAZARUS: VOICE OF LIBERTY, VOICE OF CONSCIENCE EXHIBIT Cook Library, 3rd Floor Emma Lazarus: Voice of Liberty, Voice of Conscience, a national traveling exhibition at Albert S. Cook Library from September 6, 2011 through October 14, 2011, examines the life, work, and lasting influence of this poet who wrote the iconic words Give me your tired, your poor,/ Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free that are engraved on a plaque at the Statue of Liberty. The exhibit was developed by Nextbook, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting Jewish literature, culture, and ideas, and the American Library Association Public Programs Office. The national tour of the exhibit has been made possible by grants from the Charles H. Revson Foundation, the Righteous Persons Foundation, the David Berg Foundation, and an anonymous donor, with additional support from Tablet Magazine: A New Read on Jewish Life. Tuesday, September 6th EMMA LAZARUS: VOICE OF LIBERTY, VOICE OF CONSCIENCE EXHIBIT OPENING RECEPTION 5:30-7:30pm, Cook Library, 3rd Floor and Room 507 This event will feature a dramatic reading of Lazarus poetry at 6pm and a presentation by Dr. Evelyn Avery, Professor in the Department of English, about the historical and religious significance of Lazarus work at 6:30pm. Wednesday, GRADUATE STUDENT COFFEE HOUR 4-6pm, Cook Library, Room 507 September 7th A chance for graduate students to stop by, grab a free cup of coffee, sample homemade desserts, and chat with the librarians. Tuesday, September 13th WELCOME BACK NOONTIME JAZZ IN THE LIBRARY Noon-1pm, Cook Library, 3rd Floor Lobby Towson student musicians kick off the librarys monthly jazz concert series with some toe-tapping tunes. FEDERAL DEPOSITORY LIBRARY CELEBRATION 11am-Noon, Cook Library, Front Steps (Weather Permitting) Join the Towson University community for this celebration honoring Cook Librarys designation as a new depository for United States publications. WELCOME BACK SNACK BREAK 2-4pm, Cook Library, 3rd Floor Lobby This is a great opportunity for students to stop by the library, grab a snack, and learn more about all the resources that the library has to offer.

Saturday, September 24th SATURDAY SCIENCE: THE ENGINEERING AND CONSTRUCTION OF THE STATUE OF LIBERTY 10am & Noon, Smith Hall, Room 326 Learn how the Statue of Liberty was designed, engineered, and constructed and how numerous renovations have kept Lady Liberty standing for nearly 125 years. Saturday, September 24th KIDS DAY AT THE EMMA LAZARUS EXHIBIT 11am-2pm, Cook Library, 3rd Floor A chance for children to see the exhibit and participate in an exhibit scavenger hunt and other fun activities EMMA LAZARUS: PIONEER AMERICAN ZIONIST 1-2pm, Towsons OSHER Institute, 7400 York Road Dr. Valerie Thaler, Assistant Professor of History, will present a talk focusing on Emma Lazarus activism and Jewish identity. THE ABSOLUTELY TRUE DIARY OF A PART-TIME INDIAN COOK LIBRARY BOOK CLUB 12:30-1:30pm, Cook Library, Room 507 All are welcome to this book discussion that will begin with Dr. Fran Luther, Assistant Professor of Educational Technology and Literacy, providing background on this novel that explores issues of bullying, identity, and Native American culture through the eyes of a 14-year-old boy. Then Librarian Ada Woods will lead attendees in a discussion. Light refreshments will be served. Wednesday, BANNED BOOKS WEEK: READ-OUTS September 10:30am-Noon, Cook Library, Front Steps (Weather Permitting) 28th To celebrate Banned Books Week, Towson University students, faculty, and staff will read aloud from banned or challenged book passages of their choosing. The readings will be followed by a dance installation commemorating a banned book. Tuesday, October 11th CELEBRATING EMMA LAZARUS NOONTIME JAZZ IN THE LIBRARY Noon-1pm, Cook Library, 3rd Floor Lobby In honor of the Emma Lazarus exhibit at Cook Library, Towson student musicians will play musical selections written by Jewish composers. COMICS STUDIO WITH ELLEN FORNEY 2-3:30pm, Cook Library, Room 507 Cartoonist Ellen Forney, the mind behind the comics and artwork in The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, will teach participants how to develop their own comic art. COMICS: THE EXTRAORDINARY POWER OF WORDS AND PICTURES 7-8:30pm, University Union, Potomac Lounge Comics are enjoying a new respect as a compelling literary medium. Join Ellen Forney, creator of the art in this years One Maryland One Book selection, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, as she enthuses about their quirky appeal in a presentation about both her solo projects and her work with the novel.

Wednesday, READING LIPS AND OTHER WAYS TO OVERCOME A DISABILITY October COOK LIBRARY BOOK CLUB 26th 12:30-1:30pm, Cook Library, Room 507 In honor of Disability History and Awareness Month in October, Cook Library Book Club will discuss this collection of uplifting memoirs. All are welcome to this meeting that begins with Diane Scharper, faculty member in the Department of English, providing background on the book and is followed by Librarian Claire Holmes leading attendees in a discussion.
