I drove. She would push her head out of thepassenger sides' window and shout: "ByePeople.' Then recollect herself inside the car,giggle to herself, and say: "shit"wearily, slightly as though she had been up to nogood, and punishment might havebeen fore coming. The people she shouted atwere mostly the bus riders at busstations. Hispanics who would look at herpuzzled, and in wonderment, for herflashing head of red hair and her unrehearsedlanguage: cause almost no one spokeEnglish on these streets.
