The school was foundedin 1958 and has maintained high standards of quality early childhood education throughout its52 year history. Beginning with a class of 15 stu-dents, First United now enrolls 170 annually.The school has large naturally-lighted classroomsand a full gym. The recently renovated playgroundhas been transformed into an outdoor classroomwith many opportunities to build and explore withnatural materials. may be available for your child.First United Church Nursery School is based on the belief that the child’s ability to be a life long learner is nurtured by allowing plenty of time for
curiosity, creativity, condence and initiative to
be exercised through a curriculum rich in math,language, science and art experiences. Ourexperienced and professional teachers establisha classroom environment rich in materials andexperiences and encourage children to be activeexplorers.The play based curriculum supports creative thought, self directed problem solving andexperimentation. In play children develop lan-guage skills, negotiation skills, thinking skills andplanning abilities. The children at First United areactive learners and the teaching staff are strategi-cally involved with the children as they work andplay, encouraging them to think about and verbal-ize their discoveries and presenting new materials to explore.Social and emotional growth is nurtured on aconsistent basis as children have the opportunity to work and play with each other, learning to sharespace and materials. Children collaborate withfriends and teachers on plans and the carrying outof those plans, while the teaching staff providesa warm supportive atmosphere with respect andattention to each child. The ratio of teachers tochildren is 1 - 4 for two-year-olds, 1 - 5 for three-
year-olds and 1 - 6 for four-and ve-year-olds. The
new class for kindergarten age children will alsohave a ratio of 1 - 6. This group will have many op-portunities to engage in group projects and will beable to use the skills they are learning in kinder-garten to record their observations. This class willinclude Spanish twice a week, Yoga and CreativeMovement.The nursery school is accredited by the NationalAssociation for the Education of Young Childrenand maintains the high standards of quality recog-nized by accreditation.Enrollment for the 2011-2012 school year is un-derway.
