LISTENING SKILLS

BEFORE LISTENING
Build background knowledge  Look/listen to the title of the text to determine the topic, audience & purpose  Have a purpose for listening and identify the speakers purpose  Prepare to write down key words  Minimize distractions


During Listening
Listen actively for important names, places or events  Identify the main ideas (dont worry about catching every detail)  Identify supporting details  Try using a two-column note taking format  Abbreviate common or repeated words  Listen for transition words to understand the relationship among ideas


During Listening
Review notes between readings  Think about what is being said  Make connections to your own experience or knowledge  Jot down any quotations


After Listening
In one or two sentences, summarize what you have heard  Review your notes and highlight important information  Create a graphic organizer to show the relationships among main topics and supporting details  Review your purpose for listening


Effective Listening Skills


Write it down  Maintain eye contact and provide nonverbal cues  Avoid outside distractions  Listen from the heart  Practice, practice, practice  Mirror body language  Ask clarifying questions


Listening for Specific Information


Sometimes called as intensive listening  Pay particular attention to certain words/phrases to recall specific information  Listen to news bulletins, announcements, telephone messages to know important details (a game score, time of arrival/departure of flights, names of people, places, dates, etc.)

Select what is relevant to your reason for listening Need to be able to zero in on parts of the listening text that contain the information Need to be able to ignore some parts of the text that are not relevant Need to listen for key words/phrases to get the specific information Need not concentrate on every spoken word Dont try to understand every word

Examples:  To know a football score, listen for key words like won by a score of , drew two all, beat two nil, lost to by two goals  To know the flight arrival/departure time, listen for key words like arrives at Gate 23 at , is scheduled to leave at , has landed at , has been rescheduled to

 Also

called as extensive listening  Need to listen in a more general way to get a rough idea of what the speaker is saying  Often want to find out the gist of what the speaker is saying

not to try to understand every word the speaker is saying  Often speakers stress important information or points by rephrasing, repetition, and summarizing

Listening & Speaking Practice


Go into groups of three or four  Prepare a short advertisement for a product using suitable language  Present you product in 5 minutes
