Plagiarism: myths and truths
Matthew de Klerk
Plagiarism is arguably the most seriously regarded and taboo oence at Rhodes Univer-sity. Plagiarism is dened as “using anotherperson’s work without proper acknowledge-ment, and pretending that it is one’s own,” andamounts, in eect, to academic thef.As a rst year, the rst ew lectures andtutorials in the majority o courses at Rhodeswill be devoted to scaring you into takingplagiarism seriously and learning to avoid it.All assignments are usually submitted withan accompanying “Declaration o Plagiarism”orm, whilst some courses go as ar as makingyou submit assignments to the online plagia-rism detection service turnitin.com. Usually i you are caught “stealing” someone else’s intel-lectual property, the inringing assignment inquestion is given 0% on the spot, whilst somedepartments take away your coveted Duly Per-ormed (DP) certicate (without which youcannot write exams). However, this is usually tutor or department dependant: some tutorswill mark and hand back an assignment eveni it contains no reerences; some will mark you down or not reerencing every idea. However, rom personal experience, plagiarism is something that does not need tobe eared. As long as ideas and statements arereerenced correctly (which is easy enough todo once you learn), you should be sae rompunitive measures. Some o the measures inplace (whilst they may have their merits incertain cases) are almost ‘Shock and Awe’, oroverkill. Since student papers are not auto-matically added to the turnitin.com’s paperrepository, similarities- even major ones- areofen undetected, and even i they are, chang-ing the word order or sentence structure isofen enough to drop the similarity index toacceptable levels.Nonetheless, one should not just copy-paste their riend’s work and hand it in astheir own: vigilant tutors and markers are a lotharder to ool than a simple website.
