Practical activities for primary and secondary schools
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948)
 Article 1
When children are born, they are free andeach should be treated in the same way.They have reason and conscience andshould act towards one another in afriendly manner.All human beings are born free and equal indignity and rights. They are endowed withreason and conscience and should acttowards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.
 Article 2
Everyone can claim the following rights,despite- a different sex- a different skin color- speaking a different language- thinking different things- believing in another religion- owning more or less- being born in another social group- coming from another country.It also makes no difference whether thecountry you live in is independent or not.Everyone is entitled to all the rights andfreedoms set forth in this Declaration,without distinction of any kind, such asrace, color, 'sex, language, religion, politicalor other opinion, national or social origin,property, birth or other status.Furthermore, no distinction shall be madeon the basis of the political, jurisdictional orinternational status of the country orterritory to which a person belongs,whether it be independent, trust, non-self-governing or under any other limitation of sovereignty.
 Article 3
You have the right to live, and to live infreedom and safety.Everyone has the right to life, liberty andsecurity of person.
 Article 4
Nobody has the right to treat you as his orher slave and you should not make anyoneyour slave.
No one shall be held in slavery or servitude;slavery and the slave trade shall beprohibited in all their forms.
 Article 5 
Nobody has the right to torture you.
No one shall be subjected to torture or tocruel, inhuman or degrading treatment orpunishment.
 Article 6
You should be legally protected in the sameway everywhere, and like everyone else.Everyone has the right to recognitioneverywhere as a person before the law.
 Article 7 
The law is the same for everyone; it shouldbe applied in the same way to all.All are equal before the law and are entitledwithout any discrimination to equalprotection of the law. All are entitled toequal protection against any discriminationin violation of this Declaration and againstany incitement to such discrimination.
 Article 8
You should be able to ask for legal helpwhen the rights your country grants youare not respected.Everyone has the right to an effectiveremedy by the competent national tribunalsfor acts violating the fundamental rightsgranted him by the constitution or by law.
 Article 9
Nobody has the right to put you in prison,to keep you there, or to send you awayfrom your country unjustly, or without agood reason.
No one shall be subjected to arbitraryarrest, detention or exile.
 Article 10
If you must go on trial this should be donein public. The people who try you shouldnot let themselves be influenced by others.
Everyone is entitled in full equality to a fairand public hearing by an independent andimpartial tribunal, in the determination of his rights and obligations and of anycriminal charge against him.
 Article 11
You should be considered innocent until itcan be proved that you are guilty. If youare accused of a crime, you should alwayshave the right to defend yourself. Nobodyhas the right to condemn you and punishyou for something you have not done.
1. Everyone charged with a penal offencehas the right to be presumed innocent untilproved guilty according to law in a publictrial at which he has had all the guaranteesnecessary for his defense.
2. No one shall be held guilty of any penaloffence on account of any act or omissionwhich did not constitute a penal offence,under national or international law, at thetime when it was committed. Nor shall aheavier penalty be imposed than the onethat was applicable at the time the penaloffence was committed.
 Article 12
You have the right to ask to be protected if No one shall be subjected to arbitrary

 Article 14
If someone hurts you, you have the rightto go to another country and ask it toprotect you.You lose this right if you have killedsomeone and if you, yourself, do notrespect what is written here.
1. Everyone has the right to seek and enjoyin other countries asylum from persecution.2. This right may not be invoked in the caseof prosecutions genuinely arising from non-political crimes or from acts contrary to thepurposes and principles of the UnitedNations.
 Article 15 
You have the right to belong to a countryand nobody can prevent you, without agood reason, from belonging to anothercountry is you wish.
1. Everyone has the right to a nationality.2. No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of hisnationality nor denied the right to changehis nationality.
 Article 16
As soon as a person is legally entitled, heor she has the right to marry and have afamily. In doing this, neither the color of your skin, the country you come from noryour religion should be impediments. Menand women have the same rights whenthey are married and also when they areseparated. Nobody should force a person tomarry. The government of your countryshould protect your family and itsmembers.
1. Men and women of full age, without anylimitation die to race, nationality or religion,have the right to marry and to found afamily. They are entitled to equal rights asto marriage, during marriage and at itsdissolution.2. Marriage shall be entered into only withthe free and full consent of the intendingspouses.3. The family is the natural andfundamental group unit of society and isentitled to protection by society and theState.
 Article 17 
You have the right to own things andnobody has the right to take these fromyou without a good reason.
