Most everyone calls it the Vietnam War not the Vietnam conflict.Do you believe that there is a real difference between a conflict thatended in the loss of over 58,000 U.S lives or war? I believe it was awar because millions and millions of lives were lost from all over theworld. The definition for a military conflict is an extended struggle. This is not what the Vietnam War was. The definition of war is aconflict carried on by force of arms. That is exactly what the VietnamWar was. They were fighting over communism. North Vietnam wantedcommunism and South Vietnam didn’t.In many different speeches of U.S presidents they called it a war.In President Nixon’s Silent Majority speech he says “Tonight I want totalk to you on a subject of deep concern to all Americans and to manypeople in all parts of the world--the war in Vietnam.” He also said “Thewar was causing deep division at home and criticism from many of ourfriends as well as our enemies abroad.” Both of these quotes have theword war in it. Back then everyone called it a war even JFK called it awar. Most people in congress called it a war then when we lost theycalled it a military conflict. The United States entered the war to prevent communism totakeover South Vietnam. In the end we still did not help because NorthVietnam tookover South Vietnam. North Vietnam wanted to make surethat everyone got the same amount of money. The Vietnam War waslike the Civil War but in the Vietnam War a lot more people died. Thewar had a major impact on U.S. politics, culture and foreign relations. One example is almost every country of the world relies on us.Another example is that we relie on other countries in the world. Athird example is that The culture of the U.S changed because westarted having riots we didn’t have before. The Vietnam War was the longest war in U.S. history. This warlasted for 11 years. “No event in American history is moremisunderstood than the Vietnam War. It was misreported then, and it ismisremembered now.” --Richard M. Nixon, 1985. There was no fixedbeginning for the U.S. in the Vietnam War. We helped but it wasn’t ourwar to win. The people in Vietnam call it a war. You might think that it was the Vietnam conflict but I think it wasthe Vietnam War. I believe that it was a tragic war that we shouldn’thave entered but it still is a war. It must be a war not a conflict.Everyone has different opinions and yours may be that it was a conflictbut I say it was a war.
