John Schweighardt —The Path Between aRock and a Hard Place
We all know that necessity is the othero invention, but stone scultor John Sch-weighardt discovered that loss can be thecatalyst o creativity, and even a new ca-reer. Ater ore than thirty years o build-ing and renovating hoes and coercialbuildings, this Lanark Highlands artist hasreshaed his own lie in the sae evolvinganner in which he scults stone. Both therocess and the results are hugely rewarding.
He describes the rocess s dncing with thestone. He denitely leds s he lies his vriousdiond-studded cutting, grinding nd olishingtools to his chosen rock, but ech stone,in John’s words, “teches e  new dnce.”o his discerning eye, rocks you or I wouldoverlook resent theselves s irresistibledncing rtners. Soe re bold; they n-nounce their ersonlity nd redily reveltheir sculturl nd/or unctionl identityeven s they lie on the ground in  rer’seld or in n bndoned qurry.Others re subtler, obscure, biguous:“I could be ny things; it is u to you todiscover y rel identity.” Tese re therocks tht lured John wy ro the skillednd dened trde o construction into theunredictble nd, or hi, ore ulllingcreer o stone scultor.
