Our community group is concerned that the current educational infrastructure is not meeting the needs of the families choosing to live in the inner city nor is it equipped to cope with the population boom occurring in these areas. We support quality, comprehensive public schooling and want the option of a local public school education. This could be in the form of a new school in the inner city or the addition of a non-selective stream at the existing local secondary schools nearby

Community for Local Options for Secondary Education (CLOSE) is a groupof community-minded parents and supporters concerned about the shortageof public secondary school options for families living in inner city Sydney.
We are concerned about the lack of public secondary school options within easy access of theSurry Hills/Redfern corridor. We believe the current options of Balmain, Leichhardt and Alexandria Park do not meet theneeds of the families choosing to live in the inner city and that current infrastructure is outof step with the population boom occurring in these areas.Ferrying children to these schools or further afield is not sustainable and adds to trafficcongestion. Nor is it in line with City of Sydney and broader environmental policies. We are unwilling to fracture close community ties by sending our children to schools out of area.
We seek an undertaking from theDepartment of Education and relevantlocal authorities to:
Assess the impact of the inner city babyboom on high school numbers.Explore the possibility of opening upplaces for non-selective local students atSydney Boys and Sydney Girls HighSchools.Consider other in-area options includingthe re-purposing of former schools(eg Cleveland Street High, Riley StreetPublic School) or new schools to cope withthe influx of students.  Advise our community and others similarlyaffected, of the medium to long-term DETplans for high schools in the inner city.
