Dr. J. P. Guilford

Beverly Hills, California
Dear Dr. Guilford:
In connection with my work at Personnel Research Section, AGO. I had an opportunity to see
your letter of March 6, written to Dr. Baier.
I was interested in your statement that you have identified an originality or unconventionality
factor in creative-thinking. Your finding is similar to the resulte of a factorial analysis of artistic ability
completed by M. W. Ismail. As I recall, he concluded that a certain freedom from restriction was one of
three of four factors identified.
The study was completed in Egypt gy Mr. Ismail, a faculty member at the Institute for Education.
A report on the study was accepted as a masters thesis at the University or Kentucky, in 1951.
Mr. Ismails address is Apt. 107, 599 W. 121st Street, New York 27, New york.
Dear Mr. Ismail
The above is a resonable facsinile of a letter I am sending to Dr. Guilford, of the psychology
department at the Univ. of Southern California. He was President of the Am. Psych. Assn in 1949-50
and his retiring address discussed the problem of discovering creativity.
Hope you and your family are getting along well with New York.

Mr. Mohamed E. Ismael

new York 27, N. Y.
Dear Mr. Ismail:
Many Thanks for the great favor of sending me the copy of your M. A. thesis on Analyzing the
artistic aptitude of the visual artist.
I have read your report with a great deal of interest. I think that you selected some excellent tests
for your investigation, some of which were unknown to me. They are of a kind that might prove to be
very desirable for us to include in our later studies of creative talents.
Our analyses have been different from yours in that we follow the American tradition rather than
the British. We extract more factors, do not insist upon a general factor, and rotate reference axes. Your
findings and ours will differ, therefore, in many ways, and also because you have included some factors
that we did not put into our battery.
I am sending enclosed three reports from our project, two of then describing an analysis of reasoning
and the third describing the tests in our first creative-thinking analysis. We have done a second reasoning
analysis which verified all the factors in the first except for the one called education of conceptual
patterns. We have completed the analysis of creative abilities with quite satisfying results. Reports of
these two analyses will be published very soon. Should you wish to receive copies, we will put you on
our mailing list.
As soon as members of my project who should do so have reed your thesis it will be returned do
you. Thanking you again, I am,
Sincerely yours

J. F. guilford
