HOLDS~1.Thatsocietyasatpresentconstitutedisbasedupontheownerdllp

bythecapitalistormasterclass,andtheconsequentenslavementoftheworkingclass,bywhoselabouralonewealth'is
produced.

ThispamphletwaspublishedfirstinJuly,1932,withtheobjectofexplainingbrieflytheoriginoftheSocialistPartyofGreatBritainanditsattitudetowardssomeoftheissuesconfrontingtheworkers.Thepam-phletprovedtobeausefuladditiontoPartyliteratureandwassellingsteadilyuptothetimewhentheeditionof10,000copieswasexhausted.
It
wasdecidedtoissuearevisededitionbutvariouscircumstanceshavedelayedpublicationuntilnow.TheprincipalchangesmadeinthisrevisededitionaretheomissionofthechapteronvVar,theinclusionofachapteronReligionowingtothepamphlet"SocialismandReligion')nowbeingoutofprint,anextended

SocialistStandard
atthetimeweexplainedourpositioninrelationtotheseorders,whichwasthat,intheexistingcircumstances,thepenaltieswerenotworthrisking.Wearestillofthesameopinion.Todealwiththewaradequatelyfromourpointofviewwouldalmostcertainlyresultinthesuppressionofourliterature,andwould,therefore',precludeusfromgettingourSocialistmessagetotheworkingclass.AsweareaSocialistParty,andnotmerelyananti-warparty,wewouldfailinourdutyifweriskedsuppressioninordertoexplainourattitudeupononlyoneofthefacetsofcapitalism.Weprefer,therefore,toleavethequestionforfutureexaminationratherthantoproduceanemasculatedvers'ionofourcase,andconsequentlyabotchedjob,whichwouldonlyleadtomisunderstandings.Neithermartyrdomnorfireworkswillhelpthecauseweserve,asbothareappealsdirectedsolelytotheemotionsofworkers,whereasourSocialistmessageisduectedtotheir.intelligence.Thisbeingourinterpretationofthepresentposition,

allwecansayhereisthatthebasisofourattitudetowaristhesameasithasalwaysbeen,andouroppositionthesameasitwasinthelastwar.TheaimofthepamphletistoletthereaderknowhowtheSocialistPartyofGreatBritaincameintoexistence,andhowithasprofitcdbythemistakesandfailuresofotherorga.nisationstoworkon+abodyofsoundprinciplesindispensabletoapartystrivingforSocialism.Bearingthisinmind,thereaderwillseethatChapterII.onthefoundingoftheSocialistPartyisnotmerelytherecordofaforgottencontroversy.ItshowswhyanearlierattempttoformaSocialistPartyinGreatBritainbrokedownandwhythosewhohaverefusedtolearnfromthatearlierexperiencehavefailedandwillfailagaininthefuture.Similarly,thechaptersdealingwithvariouspoliticalparties,andwiththeCo-operativeMovementandthetradeunions,areintendedtoexplaintomenandwomenwhohavebeendisappointedwiththepoorresultsoftheiractivitiesinthoseorganisationswhyitisthattheirworkandloyaltyhavenotbeenbetterrewarded.Indoingthissomerepetitionhasbeenunavoidableowingtotheneedtomakedifferentphasesclearerbyplacingthemunderseparateheadings.ForasimpleconnectedoutlineofSocialisttheoryasdistinctfromitspracticalapplica-tiontocurrentquestionsthereaderisreferredtoourpamphlet"Socialism."
