Search for Universe's Origin, Elusive Particles ViaLHC@home
August 11, 2011 12:00pm EST
Are you willing to donate a portion of your PC's computingpower for the (literal) universal good?CERN began public testing a new version of the popularvolunteer computing project LHC@home, which letsscience-minded nerds simulate the Large Hadron Collider(LHC)'s high-energy proton collisions. These volunteers willhelp physicists search for new particles that may provide insights into ouruniverse's origin, like the fabled Higgs boson.  LHC@home is just one of the numerous projects and events organized by theCitizen Cyberscience Centre, which is a partnership between CERN, UNITAR,and the University of Geneva. Its goal is to promote volunteer-based science."Citizen cyberscience is a grass-roots movement which challenges the assumptionthat only professionals can do science", said Pierre Spierer, vice rector for researchof the University of Geneva. "Given the right tools and incentives, and some onlinetraining, millions of enthusiastic volunteers can make a real difference, contributing to significant scientific discoveries."The majority of citizen cyberscience projects are organized by European and NorthAmerican scientists, but the thanks to support from the South-African-basedShuttleworth Foundation (a founding sponsor of the Citizen Cyberscience Centre)lectures and hands-on training events have been organized this year in citiesthroughout several developing nations including Beijing, Taipei, Mumbai,Bangalore, Chennai, Mauritius, Brasilia, Rio de Janeiro, and Sao Paulo.
