INTRODUCTIONImagine,
for
a
moment,
asking
a
team
of
gifted
engineers
to
invent
a
single
device
that
could
absorb
and
then
lock
up
carbon,
provide
a
carbon
neutral
building
material
or
energy
source,
help
stabilise
vulnerable
soils,
provide
a
flood
management
system
and
offer
a
source
of
shade
and
cooling
as
the
planet’s
temperatures
begin
to
rise.
And then imagine asking them tomake it a beautiful and inspiringobject too, one that created awildlife habitat and pollution filter, toboot, an object that made virtuallyevery human being feel happier. Across England’s Northwest wehave a singular opportunity: toplace trees and woodland centrestage in our region’s future. Wewant to double our regionalwoodland cover by 2050 and in theprocess deliver a greener, lowercarbon and more prosperous futureto forthcoming generations. This bold ambition is the focus ofour Forestry Manifesto and is borneout of a desire to tackle climatechange head on, to improve ourregion’s image, provide a richer andmore accessible naturalenvironment and to create genuineopportunities for job creation andenterprise. Our forestry manifesto covers thewhole of the Northwest region:Cheshire, Cumbria, GreaterManchester, Lancashire andMerseyside. It fuses both urban andrural issues (an unhelpful schism inthese convergent times) andunashamedly retains a
regional
focus, as so many of the issues ittouches upon connect our cities, towns, communities and landscapestogether.
