PREFACE
THIS
album
is
part
of
a
collectionof
photo-graphs
of
the
various
battlefields
in
Europeupon
which
the
ArmedForces
of
the
UnitedStates
were
actively
engaged
duringWorld
War
I.
Theseterrainphotographs
were
taken
and
preparedbythe
American
Battle
Monuments
Commission,,
as
provided
in
the
act
of
Congress
of
March
4,
1923,
to
complete
the
historical
record
of
theoperations
of
the
American
units.The
series
comprises
69
albums
containing
1,396
photographs.Thecontents
of
thesealbums
will
be
of
par-
ticular
value
when
studied
in
conjunctionwith
the
Summaries
of
Operations,
prepared
by
the
American
Battle
Monuments
Commission,
which
relate
in
detail
thecombat
services
of
eachAmericandivision.
On
the
page
preceding
the
photographs
will
be
found
a
small-scale
key
map
showing
the
general
operation
of
which
this
divisionalopera-
tion
was
a
part.
Inthe
pocket
inside
theback
cover
willbe
found
a
reprint
of
a
1:
20,000
map,
of
thetype
used
during
the
war,showing
theoperation
covered
by
the
photographs
"in
this
album.
On
this
indexmap
have
been
indicated
the
position
of
the
camera
and
thedirection
in
which
it
was
sighted
in
taking
each
photograph.
On
the
page
opposite
each
photograph
is
a
section
of
the
1:
20,000
map
of
theterrain
in
the
vicinity
of
that
pertaining
tothe
photograph.Thewhite
wedge-shaped
portion
of
the
map
indicates
the
sector
of
terrain
which
actuallyappears
in
thepicture.The
plotted
position
of
the
camera
and
the
axisof
the
picture
are
shownin
blue,
the
length
of
the
blueline
approxi-
matelyindicatingthe
depth
of
the
view.
The
circled
number
corresponds
to
the
number
of
thephotograph,
of
which
the
numerals
before
the
dash
indicatethe
division
andthenumeralsafter
the
dash
indicate
the
serial
number
of
thephotograph
in
this
division.Various
topographicalfeatures
visible
inthephotographs
have
been
indicated
by name
to
facilitateorientation.
Complete
sets
of
thesealbumshave
been
depositedwith
the
National
Archives,
theLibrary
of
Congress,
theHistoricalDivision
of
theWar
Department
General
Staff,
and
the
Command
and
Staff
College.
