though he set out to be an actor, not to become a star.He received his first Oscar in 1981 for directing Ordinary People and hissecond in 2002 for Lifetime Achievement. Hes won the National Medal of  Arts, The Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize, was a 2005 Kennedy Center honoree along with Julie Harris, Tina Turner, ballet dancer SuzanneFarrell and singer Tony Bennett, received an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts
