“The Pilgrim’s Progress” has been translated into more than 200different languages. In fact according to Patricia Hurry, Librarianat the John Bunyan Museum & Library in Bedford, they have intheir collection editions in 213 different languages and dialects. This makes the Maltese edition the 214th!“I started translating “The Pilgrim’s Progress” to Maltese”. This isthe note I wrote in my prayer journal dated 6th March 2004. I amoften asked questions like, “What made you decide to start this work? And why, out of so many books, did you choose to translateTHIS particular book?” My answer to the first question could besummed up in one sentence, “I started this work because I wasconvinced that God, in spite of all my limitations and weaknesses, was asking it of me.” This, as a committed Christian who values asa priority the discerning and applying of God’s will to my daily living, was a sufficient reason to start. It is enough for a servant toknow his Master’s will and obey. In fact, this conviction not only served to give me the initial push, but when I encountered the various difficulties and obstacles along the way, also helped me topersevere and finish the work. But added to this was anotherstrong reason. Sometimes when I am reading, a particular

sentence or phrase stands out and is impressed on my mind. Ifind myself thinking about it during the day, and contemplating itfrom time to time. Such was the following, written by Ephrem theSyrian who lived in the 4th Century A.D. “He who pampers his body and neglects his soul is like one who feasts his servants andstarves his wife.” To this were joined Jesus’ tremendous questionfound in Mark 8:36 “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gainthe whole world, and lose his own soul?” I became conscious, by noticing the lifestyles of many, that people were living in anunbalanced way. At present, most people I know, even professedChristians, have become aware of the need to take good care of their physical well being by choosing a healthy lifestyle with daily exercise, a healthy diet etc. This is a positive thing. The problemarises if while caring for our bodies we forget to care and nurtureour precious and immortal soul, and so end up neglecting that which has a worth that exceeds that of the body. Seeing that muchof this was present around me I was faced with two options; Icould either do nothing or I could do something. When faced withthis choice, I decided that instead of complaining and whining I will contribute something that could be uses as a means of changing the present situation that I perceived. Therefore this work of translation also started as my personal contribution to allthose who after realizing and admitting that they have thisunbalance in their life desire to rectify it. This book is goodspiritual nourishment to the soul. Let me come to the secondquestion of why I chose THIS particular book and not another. Ican mention three reasons. The first is that I believe this book to be a very good one. By this I mean that it is such a book that startsus on a train of thought and carries us far beyond the book itself,it not only informs but inspires, it serves as a ramp from whichour minds can take off, it not only comforts but challenges.
