Chapter 1 ( WORDS)

1.1 Words Building  Take the word agree. Add dis to its beginning. It becomes disagree. Now add ment to its end. It becomes dis agreement. You have to built three words from one. This way ou can add to the store of your words.  There are three types of word building : 1.) Prefixes 2.) Suffixes 3.) Compound Words


PREFIXES

A prefixes is a letter or a group of letter added to the beginning of word to from a new word. For example, re, meaning again, added to write, becomes rewrite; re is prefix Here are some examples: Anti - (Against) : anti-social, anticlimax, antibiotic Co - (Together) : co-exist, co-worker, co-education De - (opposite of) : dehumanize, decode, defrost Demi- (half) : demigod, demi-official, demi-sec. Equi (equal) : equivalent, equidistant, equilateral Dis (opposite of) : dislike, disagree, disloyal :

SUFIXES
A suffixes is a letter or a group of letters added to the end of a word to from a new word, fro Eg: ent added to govern becomes government. ent is suffix.  Suffixes often change one part off speech into another For Eg: Adjective ( Happy) into Noun (happiness) Noun ( Memory) into Verb ( memorize)


Here are some Common Examples: Able - ( Capable of being ) : Acceptable, Changeable, tolerable Ance - (state of being) : assistance, brilliance, abundance Ant (one who) : assistant, inhabitant, descendant Cide ( Killing ) : suicide, homicide, regicide Cracy ( rule by) : democracy, autocracy, monocracy Dom ( a state) : kingdom, freedom, boredom

COMP0UND WORDS
Compound words are words formed by joining two or more words. For Eg: bath plus room is bathroom. Some compound are hyphenated, some are not.  After noon = Afternoon Bag pipe Char-coal = Charcoal Cut throat Run-away = Runway Goal-Keeper


Synonyms:
Synonyms are words with similar meanings


But it should be remembered that no two words have exactly similar meanings. For example, crime, vice and sin are synonyms, words with similar meanings, but not exactly similar meanings. Crime is transgression of a countrys law, vice of moral law, and sin is a religious law.
Amusement : diversion, distraction, entertainment, recreation, fun. Anger : annoyance, antagonism, exasperation,resntment, vexation. Annotation : comment, elucidation, explanation. Basic: central, elementary, essential. Beastly: barbarous, bestial, brutal, cruel, savage. Calamity: adversity, affliction, disaster, hardship, misfortune.

Antonyms : Antonyms are words with opposite, for example,


good-bad, hot cold, soft-hard.

Some Special Words Groups names: Long usage has set down certain names of groups of animals , things or person. To call each group by its name shows taste, a feel of words. Commit them to memory and increase your word power Animals Pace of animals Flock of birds Herd of cattle Flight of doves Things Flight of airplanes, sheaf of arrows, Clump of tress.

Noun : Kinds of Nouns


A Noun is a word used as the name of person, place or thing.
