Friday Night at the Leinster

A quiet evening. Frank (bass and guitar), Ted (keys) and Rob (keys) holding down the rhythm section. Sagigo on guitar and Keith on reeds played some nice lines. Kaye sang some great standards and it looked like an early night until Paul (bass) and Wayne (tenor) turned up and gave an excuse to keep playing until 11.00. Why do we do it? Certainly not for the pay. Perhaps because the venue is welcoming and the food is good. Keeps us of the streets (that's a good thing). It's a great social evening as well. Most of all we want to play (or attempt to play) the music we love. Playing with others is always more satisfying than practicing alone at home. If you feel this way, why not join us next week. CG

from the editor In 1929 Louis Armstrong sang Aint Misbehavin and turned it into a hit. Armstrong was then in the revue Connies Hot Chocolates in New York when he made the Fats Waller and Andy Razaf song famous. With this song he may well have marked the beginning of interpreting popular songs in a jazz style. And you know what? We are still doing it. At any rate it launched Louis singing and entertaining career alongside his established trumpet playing. One of our subscribers Andrew Nolte is playing next month and harks back to that early Armstrong period of the 20s. If the music is as good as the poster ! (see below for details) ps It should be noted that not all horn players (brass or brassless) are singers. Jammers being no exception. Further raffles will help to pay for a new drum stool, recently broken in said chaotic settings. Marg

The cost is actually $10!
