“PLEASE BOTHER US.”
Proessor Alison Thompson o the Department o Chemistry at Dalhousie Universityrecently suggested that we introduce
N
-Boc-pyrrole-2-boronic acid MIDA ester. This air- and moisture-stable reagent serves as a 2-heterocyclic boronic acid surrogate that isuseul in Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling reactions.Knapp, D. M.; Gillis, E. P.; Burke, M. D.

Naturally, we made this useful heterocyclic reagent. It was no bother at all, just apleasure to be able to help.

River Landscape with a Resting Traveller
(oil on panel, 46

66.5 cm) was painted mostlikely in the mid-1650s by Jan Lievens (1607–1674), who was one o the most prominentpainters o the Dutch Golden Age. He isusually mentioned in the same breath asRembrandt, because the two artists sharedmuch during their early years. Because o Rembrandt’s greater achievement, Lievenswas long assumed to have been hisollower, but recently it has become clearthat he was initially the leader. Althoughyounger, he was a celebrated child prodigywho established himsel years beorehis colleague.Lievens’s later success lay in ollowing and interpreting the grand igurative style o Flemishmasters such as Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony van Dyck, much avored among the elite. Hecould study such works while in Antwerp, where he also saw the contemplative landscapes byRubens and other artists. These relected the Flemish tradition o rich, lively, and decorative antasylandscapes, in contrast to the more sober realism exercised by Dutch landscapists. In his ownlandscapes, Lievens tried a more luid brush handling and rolling orms. In this late scene, he placesa weary traveler reclining against a tree in a lush orest. He also betrays his penchant or arranginga screen o trees against a light background that pierces between the trunks to generate dramaand rhythm. The result is slightly otherworldly, an invitation to escape rom the urban conines anddaily pressures, that would have appealed to many collectors in both Flanders and Holland.
This painting is part of the Bader Collection of Dutch and Flemish Paintings, whosefuture home will be the Agnes Etherington Art Centre of Queen’s University, Kingston, ON,
Canada.
