UOI Letter Home: Sharing the Planet

Central Idea: Living things face challenges in sharing limited resources.

Dear Parents, We have officially started our first Unit of Inquiry (UOI). The transdisciplinary theme is: Sharing the Planet The central idea is: Living things face challenges in sharing limited resources We will be inquiring into: y y y Characteristics of living things Our needs and the needs of other living things Our responsibility for sharing the well-being of other living things

We would appreciate your help with defining the extended vocabulary at home. These words include: living things, non -living things, environment, responsibility, well -being and care. In the EY1 classes the students will start off the unit by inquirin g into their responsibilities (taking care) of living things at home. We are inviting students to bring in photos of their responsibilities for a sharing (show and tell) session. After grasping the concept of responsibilities at home the students will look into responsibilities at school. In the EY2 classes have already been building their understanding of the responsibilities of caring for all living things in our EY environment. This has begun with the exciting role of caring for our pets, however will extend throughout the year to include other living things in the EY such as plants, insects and any other living things that share our space. Please feel free to contact your childs teacher if you have any questions, comments or concerns regarding the UOI. Regards, The EY team
