The Technology
RFID is a technology with roots beginning during World War II. Today, Ultra-High Frequency (UHF) RFID is emerging as the premier technology for automating the identification and tracking of commodities and collecting valuable information on their location, contents, and other physical attributes. Organizations in Retail, Defense, Transportation, Healthcare and other industries are increasingly employing RFID technology to bring new efficiencies to supply chains, track assets, ensure product quality, enhance consumer safety, protect the integrity of their brands, and promote security. RFID offers large data storage capacities, high identification speeds, and greater immediacy and accuracy of data collection. An increasing number of organizations are embracing RFID technology into their supply chain processes for such functions as identifying multiple items in a single container - a task not possible with current barcode systems. Thus, this technology's enhanced accuracy and security in data collection makes it an ideal data collection platform for a broad spectrum of industries including healthcare, pharmaceutical, manufacturing, warehousing, logistics and retail. The application of RFID is empowered through an RFID Tag, a smart tag that possesses microchips which can store a unique serial number for every product manufactured around the world. These tags can instantly be identified through radio frequency waves and automatically recognized through an enabled reader without any significant human intervention. RFID is the next revolutionary advancement, rapidly evolving from Cinderella technology to reality.

The Market
The proliferation of RFID in the marketplace is increasing in relevance and its potential benefits are only starting to surface. It is becoming a business critical initiative for every company that manufactures and/or sells goods to transition into an RFID environment for its internal and external business processes. Thus, companies will need to conduct a scope study into this technology which promises substantial benefits to its users by increasing efficiency, supply chain visibility and new possibilities of predictive and perceptive automation. Currently, the market resides for organizations that are complying with current mandates being set by their suppliers/buyers, seeking to reduce shrinkage factors and utilizing RFID technology to facilitate a more streamlined process that can duplicate the simplistic efficiencies such as those of toll collecting passes. (i.e., EZPASS tags on toll roads such as NJ Turnpike). Currently, the primary market drivers are: International standards being set by universal bodies Constant decrease in prices for RFID tags Strict mandates being set by corporations such as like Wal-Mart Companies realizing internal efficiencies like shrinkage Development of tag and readers that can work on multiple frequencies Multiple added benefits to Bar codes
