No Justice For Craig PrescottByRobert Stanford
On April 11, 2009, In Modesto’s downtown men’s jail, Stanislaus County Sheriff Deputies tasered, pepper sprayed, beat and dog piled - to the point of suffocation,Craig Prescott, a thirty-eight year old man who had once, himself, worked alongsidethe very same Stanislaus County Sheriff deputies, that went on to end his life. The dog-piling incident, which according to the 2
nd
autopsy obtained in full by thefamily, is what mortally wounded the former deputy through suffocation. This was all committed in the course of a supposed attempt to move the formerSheriff Deputy to a “safety cell”.He was then taken to Doctor‘s Hospital Emergency, where he died two days later.According to members of the family, he was taken off of life support because theroom was needed and also on the orders of Sheriff Adam Christianson. Also, according to the family, all of the charges that resulted in his arrest had beendropped, yet he was still hand-cuffed to the railing of the hospital bed and the familywas not allowed to see him, though a nurse, told Mr. Prescott’s wife, that he was“OK.”Further the family states that there were two armed deputies disallowing anyvisitation, even though, as stated previously, according to the family, all chargesagainst him had been dropped. In the first autopsy, the cause of death was attributed to hypertensive heart disease, yet the family has stated on numerous occasions, that Mr. Prescott was in greathealth, physically and that this would have no bearing. This certainly passes thegiggle test for me, knowing that this is a typical ruling for cause of deaths in whichthe taser is thought to be the major instrument of injury.Of course, as was to be discovered later, in the second autopsy, it was in actuality thedog-piling of multiple Stanislaus County Sheriff’s deputies that contributed to hisdemise, if not the premature interruption of Craig’s life support system. The Voice of Modesto championed the family in their pursuit for justice for themurder of Craig Prescott. Providing several references and featuring a lot of thePrescott family, practically daily you will hear several references to to the Stanislaus

County Sheriff’s department, specifically including, the Sheriff himself, Sheriff andCoroner, Adam Christianson needing to atone for the murder of Craig Prescott onthe morning Blog Radio show, the Morning Mayor.Fulldetails of the case were unfolded as no one else could, and provided anopportunity for the public at large to follow every step of the case, through articlesand interviews with members of the family. On April 6
th
2010, Rachel Prescott, as an individual and further as the guardian of Craig Prescott’s children and Marilyn Prescott, his mother, filed suit against theCounty of Stanislaus itself, Sheriff Adam Christianson (not personally as othershave in the recent past, mostly in sexual harassment/wrongful termination suits)only in his “official capacity”, the California forensic Medical Group, Inc., and Doesone through the typical 25 respectively as is often appended to lawsuits of any type,at least locally.A “complaint for damages for Violation of civil rights & wrongful death” andfurther, the only term on the page to be both bold and underlined - JURY TRIALDEMANDED.Now the family has began to publicly discuss the reasons that a settlement may be inorder. A settlement that would bring closure to the case. Not just for the Prescottfamily, but also for the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s department and all of those thatwere involved in the murder of Craig Prescott.I was disappointed upon hearing that in exchange for the justice movement that thefamily and others in the community, including myself, had spurned, that this was tobe forsaken for money. In some cases of sexual harassment, I would have not only understood, butsupported a settlement. I would certainly understand. But the sheer seriousness of this case of murder as well as other differences betweenthis case and on-the-job sexual harassment in the Stanislaus Sheriff’s Departmentare like comparing apples and oranges really. Also, the great “Justice for Craig Prescott Movement” is still going on and rightfullyso as it should. But having heard now that a settlement is even being considered, Ifind it all rather disconcerting that the tax payer will have nothing to show for whatcould quite possibly be millions of dollars to make this case simply “go away”.No reform. No atonement. Nothing that was promised with the cry put out into thepublic of the “Justice for Craig Prescott” campaign.I can stand behind a jury trial, but I cannot justify sweeping the matter under thecarpet only to provide financial award to the family however well deserved that
