Cultural Things
Tatars have respectful forms to address older people. For example, they call older women “апа” and older men
“абый”. These terms are used along with the first name, for example: Галия апа, Ирек абый.
The formal way of addressing a person is borrowed from the Russian language: the first and middle names
SOME RESPECT used together. The middle name coincides with patronymic name (the name of the person's father). For
example: Мансур Фәтхиевич (-евич is a patronymic suffix for males), Алсу Маратовна (-овна is a patronimic
suffix for females.) Tatar variants are used more seldom: Мансур Фәтхи улы (literally: Mansur, Fathi's son),
Алсу Марат кызы (Alsu, Marat's daughter).
Addressing an older person only by his first name is considered to be impolite and even rude. Keep it in mind!
