General Guidelines:
The nature and standard of questions inthe
General Studies
papers will be suchthat a well-educated person will be able toanswer them without any specializedstudy. The questions will be such as to testa candidate¶s general awareness of a varietyof subjects, which will have relevancefor a career in Civil Services. The questionsare likely to test the candidate¶s basicunderstanding of all relevant issues, andability to analyze, and take a view on conflictingsocio-economic goals, objectivesand demands. The candidates must giverelevant, meaningful and succinct answers.
PAPER - I1. History of Modern India and IndianCulture :
The History of Modern India will cover historyof the Country from about the middleof nineteenth century and would also includequestions on important personalitieswho shaped the freedom movement andsocial reforms. The part relating to Indianculture will cover all aspects of Indian culturefrom the ancient to modern times aswell as principal features of literature, artsand architecture.
2. Geography of India :
In this part, questions will be on the physical,economic and social geography of India.
3. Constitution of India and Indian Polity:
This part will include questions on the Constitutionof India as well as all constitutional,legal, administrative and other issuesemerging from the politico-administrativesystem prevalent in the country.
4. Current National Issues and Topics of Social Relevance :
This part is intended to test the candidate¶sawareness of current national issues andtopics of social relevance in present-dayIndia, such as the following:(i) The Indian economy and issues relatingto planning, mobilization of resources,growth, development and employment.(ii) Issues arising from the social and economicexclusion of large sections from thebenefits of development.(iii) Other issues relating to the developmentand management of human resource.(iv) Health issues including the managementof Public Health, Health education andethical concerns regarding health-care,medical research and pharmaceuticals.(v) Law enforcement, internal security andrelated issues such as the preservation of communal harmony.(vi) Issues relating to good governance andaccountability to the citizens including themaintenance of human rights, and of probityin public life.(vii) Environmental issues, ecological preservation,conservation of natural resourcesand national heritage.
