"Canadian Crawlers" Contribute to a Successful Prouty Walk
The 30th annual Prouty Walk was held onJuly 8-9 in Hanover, N.H. This event is heldyearly to help raise money for cancer researchand patient services at nationally recognizedDartmouth Hitchcock Norris Cotton CancerCenter.Participants included the "Canadian Crawlers"with Gary Laperle acting as Team Captain. Garyand friends started riding in memory of Gary'sfather, Renald Laperle, as well as for otherfriends and families stricken with cancer. Garyhimself biked 100 miles, other participants inthis group biked anywhere from 10 to 50 miles.Some of the participants, including babies beingpushed in strollers, walked the five miles.This year there were a total of 21 friends andfamily that were recruited to the CanadianCrawlers team, up from the six members in2010. Together they raised almost $6,000.To date the Prouty Walk has raised almost$2.45 million, breaking the fundraising record.Good job everyone!

Former Vermont Mountaineer out-fielder Darin Mastroianni became the75th NECBL alumnus to reach the MajorLeagues on August 24th. The TorontoBlue Jays called up Mastroianni, whobatted ninth and played center field,when a roster spot became available dueto their recent Aaron Hill and JohnMcDonald trade to Arizona.The product of Mount Kisco, NYplayed for Vermont in 2004 and 2005.Mastroianni hit .299 during his first summer in the GreenMountain State. He swiped 20 bases in 21 attempts in 2005, rank-ing second in the league by just one larceny.The Blue Jays selected Mastroianni out of Southern Indiana inthe 16th round of the 2007 draft. He was an All-Star for theHigh-A Florida State League in 2009 and the Double-A EasternLeague in 2010. Mastroianni had amassed nearly 200 stolen basesin his Minor League career.Between Double-A New Hampshire and Triple-A Las Vegasthis season, Mastroianni hit .266 with 37 extra base hits and 28steals at the time of his call-up.Mastroianni becomes the seventh NECBL alum to debut thisyear. Ryan Lavarnway, an All-Star for the 2007 ManchesterSilkworms, debuted with the Boston Red Sox on Thursday,August 18th.Mastroianni’s 2005 Mountaineer teammate, then-catcher DavidCarpenter, ironically debuted on June 30th with the HoustonAstros. Carpenter, now a pitcher, has a 3.14 ERA in 20 games.The NECBL congratulations Mastroianni for “keeping his eyeon the dream” and reaching the Big Leagues!
