What are the Five First Saturdays?
During the apparition of July 13, 1917 at Fatima, Our Lady told thethree children that She would return to “
ask for… the Communion of Reparation on the First Saturdays”
to make reparation for the many sinsagainst the Immaculate Heart of Mary.In keeping Her promise, Our Lady appeared to Sister Lucy in herconvent in Pontevedra, Spain, onThursday, December 10, 1925, to requestthat the devotion of the Communions of Reparation on the First Saturdaysbe made known. With this devotion, Our Lady makes an amazing promise: that she willassist at the moment of death, with all the graces necessary for salvation, those who perform theseCommunions of Reparation on theFirst Saturdaysof five consecutive months. The requirements to obtain this promise are:1.Confession2.Communion3.Five Decades of the Rosary4.Over the duration of the five months, to meditate on the 15 Mysteriesof the Rosary, taking at least fifteen minutes each First Saturday.5.To do all these things in the spirit of reparation to the ImmaculateHeart of Mary.Through the tireless efforts of Sister Lucy and others, this great yetsimple devotion has, over the last eight decades, spread around the world, uniting millions in universal acts of reparation that seeks to console theHearts of Jesus and Mary and to save souls everywhere. While still on this earth, Sister Lucy herself wrote that “the greatest joy” she felt was “to see the Immaculate Heart of our so tender Mother known, loved and consoled by the means of this devotion.”
The Apparition
Eight years after the Fatima events, when Sister Lucy was living in aconvent in Pontevedra, Spain, she experienced another apparition of OurLady. On this occasion, the Virgin returned as She had promised at Fatima(on July 13, 1917) to relate the specific requirements for the Communion of Reparation on the First Saturdays.

Lucy, writing in the third person, gives the account of the December10, 1925 visit of Our Lady and the Child Jesus: “The Most Holy Virgin appeared to her [Sister Lucy], andby Her side, elevated on a luminous cloud, was the Child Jesus. The Most Holy Virgin rested Her hand on her [Sister Lucy’s]shoulder and as She did so, She showed her a heart encircled bythorns, which She was holding in Her other hand. At the sametime, the Child said:
“‘Have compassion on the Heart of your Most HolyMother, surrounded with thorns with which ungratefulmen pierce It at every moment, and there is no one tomake an act of reparation to remove them.’”
Then the Most Holy Virgin said to Sister Lucy:
“Look, My daughter, at My Heart surrounded bythorns with which ungrateful men pierce Me at everymoment by their blasphemies and ingratitude. You, atleast, try to console Me and announce in My Name that Ipromise to assist at the moment of death, with all thegraces necessary for salvation, all those who, on the firstSaturday of five consecutive months shall confess, receiveHoly Communion, recite five decades of the Rosary, andkeep Me company for fifteen minutes while meditating onthe fifteen mysteries of the Rosary with the intention of making reparation to Me.”
In calling for the Five First Saturdays, Our Lady was, in a way, reiterating the First Saturday devotions previously approved by the Church. On July 1, 1905, St. Pius X approved and granted indulgences for thepractice of the first Saturdays of twelve consecutive months in honor of theImmaculate Conception. On June 13, 1912, finally, he granted newindulgences to the practice of the first Saturday of each month. But why this new call for only five Saturdays? On May 29, 1930, in the Chapel at Tuy, Spain, Sister Lucy felt herself more intimately possessed by the Divine Presence. On behalf of herconfessor, she asked Our Lord, “Why five Saturdays and not nine, or seven,
