. We are inviting Greater Manchester based youthdance groups (10-22) to apply to take part in Signatures, showcasing the signature work of youngdancers.This year DiGM has proudly drafted in the help of award-winning Australian dancer Shaun Parker.Shaun has collaborated and performed as a dancer and counter-tenor with high profile nationaland international dance companies over the past 18 years and has made a name for himself asone of Australia’s most innovative choreographers/directors. He has worked nationally andinternationally as a dancer and counter-tenor and across music, dance and theatre, appearingwith Australian Dance Theatre, Force Majeure, The Song Company, Chunky Move, SydneyTheatre Company and State Theatre Company of South Australia. Internationally, Parker hasworked with Sasha Waltz in Berlin, Meredith Monk in New York and Compagnie ALIAS inSwitzerland. He has appeared on stage as well as in the feature films

Shaun’s role in the project is to choreograph a motif which acts as the core theme throughoutthe show. The group leaders/choreographers will be taught this dance work then use this motif as inspiration, creating your own unique and dynamic interpretations all based on the focalchoreographySignatures will provide both additional performance opportunities for youth dance groups inGreater Manchester and access to workshops with professional touring dancer

Your group leaders/choreographers must be available to attend a workshop with Shaun Parkerto learn the ‘signature motif’ on Wednesday 19
October at the Lowry, If for any reason youare not available on this date there will be another top-up workshop with Joseph Lau onSaturday 29th October at the Zion Arts Centre, Hulme from 12.30pm-4pm where you maycatch up. If selected you are welcome to attend both workshops to recap the material

You must agree to use the ‘signature motif’ in the work you create and present as part of Signatures. You can re-interpret this ‘motif’ to create a new piece of dance, or incorporateinto an existing work.
Your group must be available to attend technical rehearsals during the day of Saturday 21
January 2012 (exact times to be determined by DiGM and are non negotiable).

Signatures will feature youth dance companies from across Greater Manchester performingdance works inspired by motifs created by Shaun Parker, infused with a splash of their ownchoreographic interpretation and dance style. In the lead up to the Signatures Showcase we willbe offering a free workshop at The Lowry to group leaders/choreographers led by Shaun Parker,during which they will be taught the core choreography motifs
. We will also be offering afurther workshop on
29th October at the Zion Arts Centre, Hulme
with local artist Joseph Lau
for any group leaders/choreographers who are unable to attend the core workshop, or any groupleaders/choreographers who wish to recap the material. It is essential that a leader from yourgroup attends at least one of these workshops. Please select the appropriate members of yourgroup to attend this day.
Your group will be expected to present one performance work using the ‘Signature motif’or your group may choose to incorporate the motif into an existing work.
Your group will have a maximum of 10 minutes slot in the showcase to present oneperformance work..
When selecting the people to attend the workshop, please remember that they will beexpected to teach the dance motif to the rest of your group.
Learning the core motifs is an essential part of the project and if you are unable to attend wewill not be able to consider your application on this occasion.
How are groups selected?
To follow is a list of items we will consider when selecting groups to participate in SignaturesShowcase.
before submitting your application.
We aim to present a maximum of 10 groups, ideally one grouprepresenting each district of Greater Manchester, these include (Bolton, Bury, Manchester,Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport Tameside, Trafford, Wigan.) Dance Initiative GreaterManchester’s remit is to work with the ten districts of Greater Manchester, as such onlygroups resident in these districts will be considered for inclusion.
The lead art form in all works being presented in the showcase must be dance.
To participate
your group and group leaders must be available to attend a technicalrehearsal, during the day at the Quays Theatre, The Lowry on Saturday 21
. A time slot will be allocated to your group by DiGM and is non negotiable. Yourgroup must attend this or your group may be withdrawn from the showcase.

. Your group leader(s)/choreographers) must attend this or your group maybe withdrawn from the showcase.
We aim to present an entertaining programme for the audience, Therefore we aim topresent a range of dance styles.
We encourage dancers from all backgrounds to participate and aim to present aprogramme respresentative of Greater Manchesters’ diverse communities.
Both school based groups and community youth dance groups are welcome toapply. This is not a showcase for professional groups.
The ethos of the showcase is that all groups support each other, it is not acompetition.
Previous participation in DiGM’s showcases will not guarantee inclusion in Signatures.Groups currently unknown to DiGM are welcome to apply.
Successful applicants will be expected to pay a £23.50 registration fee per group, which isnon refundable.
We ask that where possible you submit a DVD or website link to footage of your groupswork with your application form. Whilst Signatures is not a competition, we do aim topresent a high quality programme and we will use the footage to assess the standard towhich your group are working. Whilst submitting footage will not be essential to theselection process, it provides us with additional information about your group, which mayhelp us to make a decision if a tie between two groups arises. If you are unable to submit aDVD we will still consider your application. In this case if a tie arises between two groupsand one group has not submitted footage, we will endeavour to arrange to visit a rehearsalof this group.
Completed application forms must be submitted to DiGM by
Friday 23rd September at 5pm
.DiGM & The Lowry will select participating groups from the applications and
successfulapplicants will be notified in writing by Wednesday 28
September 2011
. Decisions onselection will be made jointly by DiGM & The Lowry and the decisions taken are final.
What happens if my group are selected?
Groups selected must expect requests for further information to be supplied to DiGM in the leadup to the showcase. We will set deadlines for the return of this information/materials, thedeadlines must be adhered to and all requested information/materials supplied. This is toenable us to present your group in a professional performance context. DiGM reserves the rightto withdraw groups from the showcase for non submission of preparatory information.

Participating groups must attend a technical rehearsal during the day of the performance. Eachgroup is expected to be accompanied by a sufficient number of group leader(s) throughout the
