You And Christianity
An Introduction
"I THOUGHT I was all done with the question of religion,'' a young manconfided to me, "but I am in a greater muddle now than ever before. I guessif I hadn't come home, I would have been all right. But now I don't knowwhat to do."The young man in question was one of my former students. His grades hadbeen about average. He could have done better had he applied himself, buthe wasn't much pleased in being compelled to attend a religious school, andhad shied clear of all religious influences. He had joined the Army AirCorps, had done well, and was now on a trip home before being calledelsewhere, probably overseas. But it was at home that his troubles aboutreligion had been renewed."You know," he continued, "I was never much for religion. My parentsmade me go to church with them when I was a boy, but I did not get muchgood out of it. When I joined the Army, I made up my mind that I wasthrough with all religion. And I was, as far as I was concerned. But therewas a boy in my outfit–I guess the only one–who was a Christian. He wouldread his Bible every night and kneel for prayer before going to bed. Some of the fellows made fun of him, and I got into an argument with one of them. The result was that we had a fight about this boy, as this fellow simplywould not leave him alone. I guess I got the better of the fight, all right, butit made me mad to think that I was fighting for religion when I didn't haveany myself and didn't want any. So I just left religion alone, and I was allright until I got home."I guess Mother was kind of proud of me, and Dad also, though they triednot to show it. I went with them to church, though I would rather not havegone; but on the other hand I had no objection to meeting my old friendsagain, and that was the place to meet them. Jane was there also, the girl Iused to be interested in. We corresponded for a while even after I enteredthe Army. But then we stopped. I knew why. She had been brought up astrict Christian and had been taught from childhood to beware of anymarriage with an 'unbeliever,' and I guess I am one of them. I had a littleprivate talk with her, but didn't get much out of her. I think she still likes
