Well said. I really enjoyed developing a fluid and enjoyable writing style in college and now I often feel repressed by the dogmatic structure of science writing.

Great stuff, couldn't agree more. The established academical route wants everyone to be left brained robots, which is incidentally linked to all kinds of terrible conditions.
Someone once said that the success of any idea, theory or concept depended on it's ability to be understood by a twelve year old in under twenty minutes.

The most tedious thing about scientific writing is writing it. I become so bored I'll start work on any number of other things rather than do it. I find the only to get it done is to amuse myself: slip in a funny acronym or a subtle joke that maybe only I will get. I feel that scientific writing should be telling a story, it's more engaging, is better remembered, and is not necessarily less "scientific". But this is very hard to do in the current journal structure of intro, results, conclusions, methods. In particular, methods last makes it impossible to make the story flow.
I am in love with the title.
