Toolbars
Your screen should look something like this when you start Word.This is your main toolbar, it is called a
Ribbon
 There are some slight changes that you could makeClick on
View
in the Menu ChoicesYour
Print Layout
should be highlightedClick in the
Ruler
Box if it is not tickedYou can adjust the zoom view of the page by clicking on the + or the
 –
symbolsat the bottom right hand side of thescreen.
Quick Tip: if you don’t know which
button is which, run your mouse overthe toolbars without clicking and thenames of the buttons withdescriptions will appear.
This is called the
Office
Button. Thishas more menuchoices like
Open,Save, Print
and
Close

Page Layout
Before you start any Wordprocessing you need to be aware of how your page looks and what layout form it is in.at the bottom right hand side of your screen are the
Page layout
buttonsThe first button is the
Print Layout View
. This will show you what your document will look like when it isprinted (borders, graphics, objects etc). This is the recommended view to useThe second button is the
Web Layout View
. This will show you what your document will look like on anInternet page.The next button is the
Outline View
. This will allow you to see headings and chapters in a large documentThe next button is the
Full Screen Reading View
. This allows you to see your documentwithout toolbars; a document will appear like this if you open it as an attachment. Adialogue box will appear explaining it, click
OK
. Click on the
Close
button to change it to
Print layout
view.
Recommendation: Always set your page to Print Layout view!
This button is the
Draft View
. This will allow you to see headings and chapters in a large document

on keyboardLook carefully at the name of the top of the Dialogue box.In this example it says
My Documents.
 Double click on the File or folder that you want.
 
Open Files with Windows XP
If it doesn’t say
My Documents
at thetop of the dialogue box then click onthe black arrow which will open adropdown menu.Scroll down the list until you see
MyDocuments.
 Click on
My Documents
and then selectfile to be opened.
