ELS provides quality instruction in listening, speaking, reading and writing. No matter which program a student selects, ELS will provide placement testing upon arrival, and place the student in one of our 12 proficiency levels (Levels 101 through 112). Depending on the program, each level consists of 15 to 30 class hours weekly of teacher-led instruction. Each session is four weeks in duration. Each level includes class work, individualized tasks in the Language Technology Center, homework, quizzes, written essays and a final level test. Classroom participation is an important part of our program. At the end of each 4-week session, those students who have successfully met the requirements for that level will progress to the next ELS level of study and immediately begin the new session. Students can begin their ELS program on any one of the 26 starting dates each year and can choose to study for any number of 4-week sessions. Those students who complete Level 112 of the intensive English for Academic Purposes program will receive our Level 112 Certificate of Completion. This official document is accepted as proof of English proficiency for admission at more than 650 colleges and universities in the USA and Canada.
Core Classes
The ELS curriculum is centered on core classes which are common to the Intensive English Programs English for Academic Purposes and General English as well as Semi-Intensive English, American Explorer, Business English and the Complete Prep Program for the TOEFL iBT. These classes are the essential building blocks for successful language learning. Levels may be grouped into Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced and Masters to allow students of similar abilities and interests to study together. When levels are combined, each student is tracked and evaluated according to his or her specific level in the program. Core classes are structured to incorporate all vital areas of English language learning. This provides students with well-balanced instruction in all English language skills.

Pre-Arrival Testing
To help you better plan for your studies, ELS has created a Pre-Arrival Test (PAT). The PAT is a quick, economical and easy way to determine your current English proficiency. With that information in hand, you will know approximately how much time you will need to complete a course of study at ELS. (Final level placement will be determined by the ELS placement test, which is given to all students upon arrival at the ELS center.) You will also know in advance whether you qualify for advanced-level courses offered by ELS, such as the Complete Prep Program for the TOEFL iBT. The PAT evaluates your grammar, listening, speaking and writing abilities in 30 to 50 minutes, online. You will receive immediate, computer-generated feedback on your grammar and listening skills after completing the test. You will get teacher-generated feedback on your speaking and writing skills within 72 hours after taking the test. To find out more and locate the nearest ELS representative offering the PAT, go to www.ELS.edu/PAT for more information.
IELTS Testing
Recognition of IELTS scores has grown very rapidly; now, there are thousands of universities that accept this credential. ELS offers more IELTS examinations than any other organization in the United States. If you wish to qualify for university admission through an IELTS score, you can take the test in any of the following ELS locations: Atlanta, Boston Cambridge, Boston Newton, Charlotte, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Grand Rapids, Honolulu, Houston, Indianapolis, La Verne, Las Vegas, Melbourne, Nashville, New Haven, New York (Manhattan), Oklahoma City, Orlando, Pittsburgh, Portland, Ruston, San Antonio, San Diego, San Francisco Downtown, Santa Barbara, Santa Monica, St. Louis, St. Paul, St. Petersburg and Teaneck.

ELS offers the TOEIC Exam at the following Centers: Chicago, Houston, Oklahoma City, Philadelphia, Seattle and St. Paul. Students can register for and take the official TOEIC test at these locations.
TOEFL Testing
TOEFL iBT is the latest version of the ETS English proficiency test designed to assess English language skills in academic settings.
