4 | ELS Quality Instruction

ELS provides quality instruction in listening, speaking, reading and writing. No matter which program a student selects, ELS will provide placement testing upon arrival, and place the student in one of our 12 proficiency levels (Levels 101 through 112). Depending on the program, each level consists of 15 to 30 class hours weekly of teacher-led instruction. Each session is four weeks in duration. Each level includes class work, individualized tasks in the Language Technology Center, homework, quizzes, written essays and a final level test. Classroom participation is an important part of our program. At the end of each 4-week session, those students who have successfully met the requirements for that level will progress to the next ELS level of study and immediately begin the new session. Students can begin their ELS program on any one of the 26 starting dates each year and can choose to study for any number of 4-week sessions. Those students who complete Level 112 of the intensive English for Academic Purposes program will receive our Level 112 Certificate of Completion. This official document is accepted as proof of English proficiency for admission at more than 650 colleges and universities in the USA and Canada.

English for Academic Purposes

Studying at a college or university outside of your home country is very demanding and requires a high level of English proficiency. The intensive English for Academic Purposes program gives students the opportunity to focus on the academic skills they will need to succeed in their pursuit of higher education. English for Academic Purposes students benefit from four hours of morning classes designed to build a foundation for communicative competency: two lessons of Structure and Speaking Practice (or Language Studies), one lesson of Reading and Writing and one lesson in our Language Technology Center. In the afternoon, students study for two hours in our Skills Enhancement Classes. These classes are designed to build on the core skills taught in the morning classes. Skills Enhancement Classes for the beginner level students (Levels 101 103) focus on basic oral and written communication skills. They give students a chance to practice and gain skill with the content taught in their morning classes. Starting at the intermediate levels (Levels 104 106), the English for Academic Purposes students begin to focus on academic literacy skills. One Skills Enhancement Class each day is dedicated to academic preparation, while the second class focuses on general English skills. Once these students reach the low-advanced level (107), both afternoon Skills Enhancement Classes are typically dedicated to improving academic reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. Because the academic preparation begins at an early level, and complements the core English skills taught in the morning, students acquire a high level of English proficiency and are well prepared for academic study. When students complete Level 112 of the English for Academic Purposes program, they receive a certificate that shows that they have fulfilled the English language requirement at more than 650 colleges and universities. English for Academic Purposes students gain many advantages. Miss Turkey Attended ELS New York

ELS Language Centers was the proud sponsor of Miss Turkey 2009. ELS sponsored the English studies of Miss Turkey 2009 (as well as the top four runners-up). This offered the finalists the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of English, and experience living within the United States. The winner of the Miss Turkey 2009 competition, Ms. Ebru Sam, took advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, attending the ELS Center in New York (Manhattan). She was excited about the opportunity to attend a school in the United States and to increase her English fluency. Ms. Sam said her motivations to improve her English were not only to assist her in her personal life, but also to succeed in her profession when she competes on an international level. Additionally, the friendships that she has made will last a lifetime. ELS Language Centers is very happy and honored to have had Miss Turkey 2009 as a student and future member of the ELS Alumni Network.

The ELS Advantage

els textbooks Students in all levels keep their textbooks for their core listening and speaking classes (called SSP or LS). Students are encouraged to write notes in these books, and highlight key words to help reinforce learning. Students in Levels 101-109 keep their reading and writing books as well. Students in higher-level classes work from class sets of books while completing their own research projects. The ELS-branded textbooks are frequently revised to reflect the very latest materials from the most respected authors in the ESL field. The books use content from Pearson Longman, the worlds largest and best-known publisher of ESL materials. stAndARdized level ComPletion testing ELS, in partnership with Chauncey Group of ETS, has developed exclusive level completion tests that accurately measure a students abilities upon completing each ELS level. ETS is the developer of the SAT, GRE, TOEFL, TOEIC and other standardized tests. The ELS standardized tests are updated as changes are made to the ELS curriculum.

*Certificate of Completion requires a minimum of 12 weeks of study as a student in Intensive English Masters levels.

ELS Language Technology Centers

Your Personalized Learning Plan!
ELS has designed a learning environment for you that not only complements live classes, but does much more. Language Technology Centers (LTC) are available at all ELS locations*. The LTC incorporates computer-supported learning with classroom instruction to make the most of your class time. Students receive individualized learning plans, specialized content and support, and attention to specific language challenges. ELS Language Technology Centers give you the opportunity to work on those aspects of your English skills which require the most attention, such as vocabulary development, reading and listening comprehension, and pronunciation. Specially trained instructors will create an Individual Learning Plan with you, based on your skills. Instructors are in the Language Technology Center to supervise student learning and assist by answering questions while they monitor your work from a central console. You will benefit from repeated practice through exercises and immediate feedback on how well you are doing. Progress indicators will show exactly what is being learned and how successfully. Because students in Language Technology Centers study at individual stations by means of Individual Learning Plans, the labs can accommodate 20-40 learners comfortably. Portfolios and program records keep track of activities and programs. *Except ELS/Juilliard

Pre-Arrival Testing
To help you better plan for your studies, ELS has created a Pre-Arrival Test (PAT). The PAT is a quick, economical and easy way to determine your current English proficiency. With that information in hand, you will know approximately how much time you will need to complete a course of study at ELS. (Final level placement will be determined by the ELS placement test, which is given to all students upon arrival at the ELS center.) You will also know in advance whether you qualify for advanced-level courses offered by ELS, such as the Complete Prep Program for the TOEFL iBT. The PAT evaluates your grammar, listening, speaking and writing abilities in 30 to 50 minutes, online. You will receive immediate, computer-generated feedback on your grammar and listening skills after completing the test. You will get teacher-generated feedback on your speaking and writing skills within 72 hours after taking the test. To find out more and locate the nearest ELS representative offering the PAT, go to www.ELS.edu/PAT for more information.

TOEIC Testing
The Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) is the test widely accepted by corporations and government agencies around the world. ELS offers the TOEIC Exam at the following Centers: Chicago, Houston, Oklahoma City, Philadelphia, Seattle and St. Paul. Students can register for and take the official TOEIC test at these locations.

HOUSING OPTIONS

ELS offers a variety of living accommodations to suit your needs and preferences. Whichever you select, you will find your accommodations comfortable, inviting and ideal for your study in the USA and Canada.

Student Residence
Most ELS locations on university campuses offer accommodations on or next to campus that will permit you to easily meet students and experience campus university life on a day-to-day basis. Living in a residence hall and eating your meals at the school cafeteria, you will have many opportunities to practice your newly acquired English skills, share experiences with other students and make lasting friendships.

Homestays
All ELS Centers offer homestay accommodations with an Englishspeaking host family. ELS host families are carefully screened to ensure they provide a pleasant and safe home away from home for our students. Living with a host family can help you learn English faster while experiencing customs and culture firsthand. Students often develop very close relationships with their hosts - friendships that can last a lifetime.

Apartment Housing
If you prefer a more independent lifestyle, you may want to live in an apartment near your ELS Center. Apartment costs and conditions vary widely depending on the location. Some ELS locations have special relationships with local apartment providers that welcome ELS students, families, married couples or executive clients. Many ELS Centers can advise you on finding a furnished apartment to suit your preference and budget.
