Foreword

International as well as local experience has shown that small businesses canprovide an important contribution to employment and the creation and distributionof wealth. The lack of access to relevant business information and advice is one of the many challenges which face small businesses, especially start-up enterprisesand micro-enterprises. Some of the areas where challenges are experienced includeaccess to marketing, access to finance and business management skills.One of the functions of the Department of Economic Development is to promoteenterprise development by assisting small and medium enterprises to access themainstream economy in the province. Newly established businesses and projectsare always faced with challenges when they source funds for their businesses. Thisdirectory provides a listing of programmes and organizations that provide fundingand non-financial assistance to businesses in the province.Project and business funding support particularly, and other non-financial assistance, is available from a widerange of sources that include, unilateral and multilateral, foreign and local donors including government,development and development finance institutions, the corporate social responsibility programmes of financialinstitutions of South Africa, and semi-government organizations, institutions and foundations.The Department is committed to removing obstacles that constrain access to information on available public andprivate resources that promote economic growth. Government has made available significant resources to createaccess to opportunities, especially for marginalized societies, but due to several constraints, most of those whoneed the information are unable to access or utilize it.
