Responding to a rebellion in 2003, the regime of SudanesePresident Omar Al-Bashir and its allied militia, known asthe Janjaweed, launched a campaign of destructionagainst the civilian population of ethnic groups identifiedwith the rebels. They wiped out entire villages, destroyedfood and water supplies, stole livestock and murdered,tortured and raped civilians. Millions have fled their homesand live in dangerous camps in Darfur. Violence continuestoday. The fate of the Darfur people depends onestablishing a lasting peace in all of Sudan and in theregion.
