Communities Against Pongs! Raising one hell of a stink!

AFTER 11 YEARS of ongoing odour problems at Yorkshire Water's Waste Water Treatment Works exacerbated by truly awful smells that have ruined summer months this year for many residents then anger and discontent have materialised into an active campaign of opposition. A petition calling on the East Riding Council to declare the water company a 'statutory nuisance' for its smells has been signed by just over 2,400 people. Hundreds have attended events in Hull, Paull and Hedon to show their anger. Comments attached to a Wall of Shame have expressed local discontent and opinion. More inside....

BP CHEMICALS LTD at Saltend has given advance notice of its intention to test its toxic alarm system on TUESDAY 20th SEPTEMBER.
The alarm sounds like an old World War II air raid siren, and is normally tested every Wednesday. But the exercise on 20th September is a major test of what the Saltend workforce would do in a real toxic gas release and will involve the alarm sounding for a longer period. BP cannot give a precise time for the test because they not want their workforce to be too prepared. ANTI-SMELLS CAMPAIGN PETITION WALL OF SHAME

2,405 people signed the petition (1,034 signed online, and 1,371 signed paper versions). 118 People added comments to the Wall of Shame!
A SMELL SO BAD THAT YOU CAN TASTE IT is just one comment amongst over 100 added to the Communities Against Pongs Wall of Shame. The Wall, designed to be a lasting reminder of the misery and discomfort caused by the odours from Saltend and the anger caused by the stench, will be sent to Yorkshire Water bosses.

DANGEROUS TRAFFIC THROUGH PRESTON? MONSTER WHEELS get a bit too close for comfort at times when you stand on the crossroads in Preston!
This photo typifies the wheels confronting pedestrians as you walk along the narrow pathways of streets at Preston crossroads. It can be quite overwhelming if not terrifying! to be as close to such monster wheels that you can touch them! Preston resident John Hockless... ...thinks that the current situation with an established HGV (Heavy Goods Vehicle) route going right through the village from East to West, means that serious accidents are inevitable! John said: People of Preston must be made aware of the risks before someone is dragged under the wheels of one of these monsters. The decision to establish the HGV route through the village was made in the year 2000 following a consultation process which involved a major meeting being held in the village. However, the attendees at that meeting did not have eleven years experience of being subject to major traffic flowing through the centre. So perhaps it is time to review that decision and look at new options for making Preston roads feel safer!? The East Riding Council has provided the above data about the overall numbers of crashes in the village which shows only 5 serious accidents in five years but does this reveal the full story or redress the fears amongst local people? PAULL HOLME TOWER is a 15th Century three storey brick tower between Paull and Thorngumbald and was once part of a grand manor house and moated-complex. The Tower, a Grade I listed monument, is believed to be located at the centre of the original settlement of Paull. Buildings may have been on this site dating back to before the Domesday Book was written!
Paull Holme Tower is now described as being in very bad condition by English Heritage. Its priority status has been classed as A(A) which signifies that it is at:

IF YOU are concerned about our local heritage literally crumbling away in front of our eyes, then you might want to get involved in actions to save this important piece of our local history! It is hoped that a trust or not-for-profit body can be established to look at preserving the ancient building.
