GOLDEN RATIO

In mathematics and the arts, two quantities are in the golden ratio if the ratio of the sum of the quantities to the larger quantity is equal to (=) the ratio of the larger quantity to the smaller one. The golden ratio is an irrational mathematical constant, approximately 1.6180339887. Other names frequently used for the golden ratio are the golden section (Latin: sectio aurea) and golden mean. Other terms encountered include extreme and mean ratio, medial section, divine proportion, divine section (Latin: sectio divina), golden proportion, golden cut, golden number, and mean of Phidias. The golden ratio is often denoted by the Greek letter phi, usually lower case.

The Formula of Calculation

Two quantities a and b are said to be in the golden ratio if:

This equation unambiguously defines . The right equation shows that a = b, which can be substituted in the left part, giving

Dividing out b yields

Multiplying both sides by and rearranging terms leads to:

The only positive solution to this quadratic equation is

Question Many studies of the human body show that the dimensions of the human body do involve the golden ratio. Use a friend in your class and make one such measurement and round off your measurements to the nearest cm. Comment on how close your friends body resembles the golden ratio and the significance of the value you have calculated (50-100 Words).

Solution: The Golden Ratio in the Human Face There are several golden ratios in the human face. Do not pick up a ruler and try to measure people's faces, however, because this refers to the "ideal human face" determined by scientists and artists. For example, the total width of the two front teeth in the upper jaw over their height gives a golden ratio. The width of the first tooth from the centre to the second tooth also yields a golden ratio. These are the ideal proportions that a dentist may consider. Some other golden ratios in the human face are: Length of face / width of face, So, I have done my measurement about the beauty of golden ratio on his face. The subject that I have selected was Muhamad Farhan Bin Abdul Halim from 1 MTED 3. The measurement of his face is stated below: width: Length:

Comment From the calculation, the result have shown that Farhans face is towards ideal human face. The measurement of the width of the face Farhan has shown the exact golden ratio is 1.6824. As for the length of the face Farhan, the measurement of is not very slightly less accurate with the golden ratio which is 1.7025. This is because the possible occurrence of an error from my fault when making measurements on the face. In addition, Farhan has a large body size and BMI are overweight category. Therefore, this might be one factor why the length of the face is not in conformity with the golden ratio.
