One of the central questions for UK defence policy makers looking at future force structures is likely to be that of what platform will fly from UK aircraft carriers in support of expeditionary operations to provide close air support and air superiority for UK forces.

This paper considers the following five options which policy makers will likely have to consider should the JSF programme outright, or the VSTOL variant specifically be cancelled.
