TK3501 EthernetPlus Evaluation and Design Kit

The Teknovus TK3501 Evaluation and Design Kit is a media converter using the TK3501. The design kit includes a TK3501 board with schematics, configuration scripts, and user documentation. The board serves as a media converter between the local-side Fast Ethernet port (either Copper or Fiber) and the plant-side Fast Ethernet port (Fiber). In addition FastEthernet, the local-side provides 4 T1/E1 interfaces, alarm inputs and outputs, and a serial communication channel. Data from these local interfaces is multiplexed with the Ethernet data using a patent-pending out-of-band technique, and sent to the remote side over the plant fiber using a standard Ethernet optical transceiver. A TK3501 board at the remote side demultiplexes data back into the various interfaces. The design kit allows system equipment vendors to evaluate the TK3501 features and surrounding circuitry. Developers can use this kit as a reference design for their equipment, providing faster time-to-market.

The TK3501 board shown above serves as a media converter between the local-side FastEthernet port on the left and the plantside FastEthernet port on the right. The board provides a control SPI port, LEDs,

switches, debug headers, and jumpers for maximum flexibility in configuring and using the board.

System Diagram:
The following figure shows a diagram of two TK3501 evaluation boards connected using standard Ethernet tranceivers. In a service provider access system, the board on the left would be located at the Central Office, while the board on the right would be located at the subscriber premise. The system allows providers to offer Ethernet plus TDM services with carrier class management and reliability. The TK3501 system could also be used in an Enterprise application, providing a managed media converter solution for fiber connectivity. Using the TK3501 system to multiplex TDM and serial communication channels with Ethernet can reduce the cabling required in the Enterprise, while the advanced monitoring and management functions allow for higher availability and lower maintenance costs.
