1.Civil Services Examination
The Civil Services Examination consists of two successive stages: (i) Civil Services (Preliminary)Examinations (Objective Type) for the selection of candidates of Main Examination; and (ii) CivilServices (Main) Examination (Written and Interview) for the selection of candidates for the variousservices and posts noted below. After appearing at the Preliminary Examination, candidates whoare declared successful to have qualified for admission to the Main Examination (held duringOctober/November) have to apply again, in the detailed application form which is supplied to them.

2.Number of Vacancies
:The number of vacancies to be filled on the result of the examination will be specified in the Noticeissued by the Commission.Reservation will be made for candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes. ScheduledTribes. Other Backward-Classes and Physically disabled categories in respect of vacancies asmay be fixed by the Government.
3. Chance Limit:
Every candidate appearing at the examination who is otherwise eligible shall be permitted four attempts at the examination.Provided that this restriction on the number of attempts permissible to candidatesbelonging to other Backward Classes who are otherwise eligible shall be seven.
Notes:
i) An attempt at a Preliminary Examination shall be deemed to be an attempt at theExamination.ii)
 
If a candidate actually appears in anyone paper in the Preliminary Examination he/sheshall be deemed to have made an attempt at the Examination.iii)
 
Notwithstanding the disqualification/cancellation of candidature the fact of appearance of the candidate at the examination will count as an attempt.4.
 Age Criteria
a)A candidate must be have attained the age of 21 years and must not haveattained the age of 30 years on the Ist of August, 2005, (This is for 2005 exam)i.e., he must have been born not earlier than 2 August, 1975 and not later than 1"August, 1984:b)The upper age-limit prescribed above will be relaxable:i. Upto a maximum of five years if a candidate belongs to a ScheduledCaste or a Scheduled Tribes:ii.
 
Upto a maximum of three years in the case of candidates belonging toOther Backward Classes who are eligible to avail of reservation applicableto such candidates;iii.
 
Upto a maximum of five years if a candidate had ordinarily been domiciledin the State of Jammu and Kashmir during the period from the 1stJanuary, 1980 to the 31st day of December, 1989;

iv.
 
upto a maximum of three years in the case of Defence ServicesPersonnel, disable in operations during hostilities with any foreign countryor in a disturbed area and released as a consequence thereof;v.
 
upto a maximum of five years in the case of ex-servicemen includingCommissioned Officer and ECOs/SSCOs who have rendered at least fiveyears military Service as on the 1st August, 2005 and have beenreleased;a) on completion of assignment (including those whose assignmentis due to be completed within one year from 1st August, 2005)otherwise than by way of dismissal or discharge on account of misconduct or inefficient; or b) on account of physical disability attributable to Military Service; or c) on invalidmentvi.upto a maximum of five years in the case of ECOs SSCOs who havecompleted an initial period of assignment of five years of Military Serviceas on 1st August, 2004 and whose assignment had been extendedbeyond five years and in whose case the Ministry of Defence Issues acertificate that they can apply for civil employment and they will bereleased on three receipt of offer of appointment.
5. Educational Qualification
A candidate must hold a degree of any of the Universities incorporate by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an Act of amendment or declared to deemed as a University under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act,1956 or possess an equivalent qualification.
Note: I
: Candidates who have appeared at an examination the passing of which would render them educationally qualified for the Commission's examination but have not beeninformed of the result as also the candidates who intend to appear at such a qualifyingexamination will also be eligible for admission to the Preliminary Examination.All candidates who are declared qualified by the Commission for taking the Civil Services(Main) Examination will be required to produce proof of passing the requisite examination alongwith their application for the Main Examination failing which such candidates will not be admitted tothe Main Examination.
6. Scheme and subjects for the Preliminary and Main Examinations. A. Preliminary Examination
The examination will consist of two papers.
