Patterns for Colouring

As a father of two highly energetic boys I often have the problem of what to do with them on rainy days and were all stuck indoors. Being a designer I thought that I should at least try to use some of my skills to keep them entertained. I got stuck into lots of Blue Peter style model making with cardboard and glue etc. The kids loved it. Trouble is it takes up quite a lot of time and sometimes you just need something quiet that they can get on with by themselves. No, not just the Playbox Wiistation, but something that will inspire their creativity. I looked around the web and found quite a few craft and printables (downloadable colouring pages) sites but the quality of image just left me uninspired. For a start a lot of these sites were knee deep in ads and the user experience atrocious. So I decided to have a crack at creating my own project.

I decided that I didnt want to do banal kiddy images. I wanted to try and make the site have a wide audience age range. I remembered that as a child I spent quite a lot of time using pattern books for my colouring fix. I used to hound my relatives to get me the books of Altair Designs (way back in the seventies!). They were full of geometric based images that totally fascinated me and kept me out of harms way for many an hour. I looked around the web but found only a few pattern based sites. Patterns For Colouring was born.

A year after its inception I decided that it would be good to get other creatives to add to the stockpile of patterns. Hopefully to expand the range of styles and broaden the audience appeal. It also gives artists a chance to help kids and have a crafty bit of self promotion too. Ive had some fantastic patterns sent to me so far. The likes of Sam Gilbey, Ben OBrien, Matt Williams and The Boy Fitz Hammond (among others) have taken part. The invitation for pattern creators is open ended - please get involved.

Although I used to work on .net magazine my web skills are fairly basic - I know my way around to get by and make things just about work. Im pretty aware that the site could be better but it does the job (I hope).
