LEARNING GUIDES AND PRACTICE CHECKLISTSFOR MALE CIRCUMCISION COUNSELLING ANDCLINICAL SKILLS
The Learning Guides and Practice Checklists for Male CircumcisionCounselling and Clinical Skills contain the steps or tasks performed by thecounsellor and clinician when providing MC services. These taskscorrespond to the information presented in relevant chapters in the
Manual  for Male Circumcision under Local Anaesthesia
developed by the WorldHealth Organization, UNAIDS and Jhpiego. These tools are designed to help the participant learn the steps or tasksinvolved in:

Group education on male circumcision and male reproductive health

Checklist for individual counselling on male circumcision andreproductive health

Client assessment for male circumcision

Dorsal slit male circumcision procedure

Forceps guided male circumcision procedure

Sleeve resection male circumcision procedure

48-hour postoperative review
USING THE LEARNING GUIDES
There is one
learning guide
in this handbook for each of the skills listedabove. Each learning guide contains the steps or tasks performed by thecounsellor and clinician when providing an MC service. The learner is
not
expected to perform all of the steps or tasks correctlythe first time s/he practices them. Instead, the learning guides are intendedto be used under the direction of the clinical trainer, as follows:

A clinical trainer will be assigned to help the learner in learning thecorrect steps and the order in which they should be performed (skillacquisition)

The clinical trainer will ensure progressive learning in small steps asthe learner gains confidence and skill (skill competency)

Used consistently, the learning guides and practice checklists helplearners measure their progress and stay focused on the steps and tasksinvolved in providing MC services. Furthermore, the learning guidesare designed to make communication (coaching and feedback) between the learner and clinical trainer easier and more helpful.

Because the learning guides are used to help in developing skills, it isimportant that the rating (scoring) be done carefully and as objectively as possible. The learner’s performance of each step is rated on a three-pointscale as follows:
1 Needs Improvement
: Step or task not performed correctly or out oforder (if necessary) or is omitted
2 Competently Performed
: Step or task performed correctly in correctorder (if necessary) but learner does not progress from step to stepefficiently
3 Proficiently Performed
: Step or task efficiently and preciselyperformed in the correct order (if necessary)
USING THE PRACTICE CHECKLISTS
The
checklists
for the different skills are included in this handbook. Thesefocus on
key

steps
in the MC protocols and are based on the appropriatelearning guides. The checklists focus only on the key steps in the
entire
procedure, and can be used during role-play simulations by an observer, by the counsellor as aself-assessment form or by the clinical trainer to evaluate the participant’s performance at the end of the course. The rating scale used is described below:
Satisfactory
: Performs the step or task according to the standardprocedure or guidelines
Unsatisfactory
: Unable to perform the step or task according to thestandard procedure or guidelines
Not Observed
: Step, task or skill not performed by participant duringevaluation by trainer

Remember:
It is the goal of training that
every
participant perform
every
task or activity correctly, working in a simulated setting with anatomicalmodels, by the end of the course.Service providers successfully completing the MC course will be eligiblefor continued competency development in the clinical setting under thesupervision of clinical trainers.
