Chamber Appoints Directorof Entrepreneurial Development

JJ O’Connell has joined the Eugene Area Chamberof Commerce as Director of EntrepreneurialDevelopment. O’Connell is a recent MBA from theUniversity of Oregon’s Center for Innovation andEntrepreneurship. Whileearning his MBA, O’Connellserved as GraduateAssistant to the Directorof the Lundquist Centerfor Entrepreneurship. Inaddition, he served as arepresentative on The DuckStore Board of Directors, aFellow in the Technology andEntrepreneurship Programat the University and haslaunched two businesses.O’Connell will lead theChamber’s efforts to support early-stage companiesas part of its economic development programentitled the Regional Prosperity Initiative. Thatsupport includes connection to needed professionalexpertise, technical information and preparednessto attract equity and debt capital; overseeingprograms designed to support entrepreneurshipin the region including Smart-ups Pub Talks, theSouthern Willamette Angel Network (SWAN) and theWillamette Angel Conference (WAC), and leadingoutreach efforts to help them meet their goals.

Addressing Eugene’s shortage of industrial land remains atop priority for the Eugene Area Chamber of Commerce.Finding a solution that ts the values of our communityrequires a good understanding of state land use laws,current land supplies and the steps needed to reacha solution. The Chamber’s Local Government AffairsCouncil has consistently communicated the importance ofaddressing Eugene’s shortage of industrial lands throughits active participation in the Envision Eugene process; inproviding technical support to City staff in the analysisof available lands and by advocating for the responsibleaddition of industrial lands. The Chamber believes thatEugene needs at least 400-500 acres of new industrialland in larger parcel sizes to meet the needs of existingand future employers.
