On September 11, 2001, 73 workers from Windows on theWorld, lost their lives. Survivors banded together to start the Restaurant Opportunities Center of NewYork (ROC-NY), an organization dedicated to improve working conditions in the restaurant industry. In2008, the same group of workers founded the Restaurant Opportunities Centers United (ROC-United),a national organization that helps restaurant workers in other cities establish ROC’s of their own. Todayformer Windows workers, and ROC supporters and staff came together at an anniversary benefit tohonor the lost Windows workers and celebrate the movement launched as their legacy.The theme of the benefit was 107 stories, that signifies both the 107
th
story of Tower Two at the WorldTrade Center where Windows on the World Restaurant was located and the 107 stories that offer asnapshot of the restaurant worker movement born from the tragedy. Today ROC has eight locationsand a combined membership of nearly 8000 workers. Since its’ founding ROC has:
Won ten workplace justice campaigns with more than $5 million in damages and significantpolicy changes in fine-dining restaurant businesses;
Partnered with 50 ‘high road’ employer partners around the country to promote the ‘high road’ toprofitability in the industry and train more than 2000 low-wage workers in livable wagerestaurant job skills; and
Published 15 reports on the restaurant industry, based on more than 5000 surveys of restaurantworkers; worked with other organizations to win an increase to the New York state tippedminimum wage; and trained 2500 workers in advance restaurant skills to help them obtain livingwage jobs.Fekkak Mamdouh, a former Windows worker, who was scheduled to work at 3:30 PM on September 11

Sadness for my missing friends from Windows, and pride in the movement we’vebuilt during the last ten years. We pay tribute to my friends each day by fighting to improve the lives of all restaurant workers.”
