What is the New World?


The New World is the land the Conquistadors, like Christopher Columbus, discovered
North America South America The Caribbean (Haiti, Dominican Republic, Cuba)

Christopher Columbus arrived in the CARIBBEAN (Haiti and Dominican Republic) in 1492!

Why did the Conquistadors come to the New World?

Why did the Conquistadors want slaves?


The conquistadors believed that the Indians could lead them to the gold. They wanted free labor (work) from the Indians to plant and harvest sugarcane.

Conquistadors and the Indians


The conquistadors immediately tortured, killed, and enslaved the Indians in the Caribbean and in South America The Indians died very quickly because they could not withstand the diseases that the Europeans brought with them to the New World.

Conquistadors and the African Slave Trade

Europeans had begun to enslave Africans and brought a few to the New World in 1518. The Europeans soon realized that the African were not affected as much by European disease and could also produce 4 to 8 times more work as the Indian.

Africans were used as Slaves ALL OVER the WORLD (Not just in America)

Where were the most African slaves?

The countries with the THICKEST arrows had the most slaves.

Africans were brought to America when Jamestown, Virginia (the first American colony) was established in 1619 in order to grow SUGAR and TOBACCO.

How did Slavery move to America?

After Jamestown, Slavery spread South in America in order to plant more crops and make more money.
