A amiliar and comorting presence leaves his post
Ressie Crossing Guard John Dangereld retires at 87 ater 21 years
By Roger BianchiniWarren County ReportOne amous Mr. Dangereld,Rodney, just doesn’t get any re-spect – however on Sept. 1 theFront Royal own Council andthe town police department gavea boatload o respect to anotherDangereld.Te occasion was the retire-ment o John E. Dangereld a-ter 1 years as the public schoolcrossing guard on Criser Roadin ront o Ressie Jeries El-ementary School. It was our Mr.Dangereld’s second retirement. His rst, he told us was rom a30-plus year career at AmericanViscose. In act his tenure there, ending at age 65, transcended allthree owners o what was or al-most 50 years the town’s majorprivate sector employer. But in September 011, Dan-gereld was getting his dues orhis post-Avtex retirement serviceto this community and its chil-dren.“He’s been looking over ourmost important asset – our chil-dren,” Mayor im Darr said in ac-knowledging a man he observedhe has known most o his lie.Darr said he rst encounteredDangereld when he did somework as a young man at Avtex, thenal incarnation o the AmericanViscose rayon manuacturingacility. – “But I never knew hislast name was Dangereld,” Darrsaid, adding a very respectul,“He’s a great man,” to the crossingguard’s retirement accolades. So, how does it eel to nally begetting some respect?” we asked, adding our two cents to a Rodney Dangereld reerence our ownMr. Dangereld has probably heard at least more than once toooten.“What do you mean? – I stilldon’t get none!” he replied witha good-natured laugh despite oureorts at a cheap one liner.Joking about his age – 87– Dangereld said one youngwoman – “She’s just as sweet asshe can be” – recently told him,“Pops, you’re older than Methu-selah.’“I said, ‘I am not.’ And she said,‘Well I know you are because youused to help me get across thestreet and now I have a baby inschool and you’re helping him gethome.’ ”So how many o his commu-nity’s youth does he think hehas helped homeward over thecourse o his second career as acrossing guard under the auspic-es o FRPD, we wondered.“A whole lot o them.”On a serious note, Dangereldsaid it was his age catching upwith him that led to his decisionto call it a day in ront o Ressie.“Tere comes a day in lie when you know you’ve made a mistakeand it’s your ault, so it’s time to

And one time a kid cameout and I didn’t see the kid andhe went out into the street. I’mstanding there, so it’s my ault. And I knew it was time to leavebecause I don’t want my kids go-ing out there when I’m responsi-ble or them. I just didn’t see him– I’m getting old. I’m not makingan excuse – just that Father imegot me.”oo bad more o us don’t havethat degree o sel-policing andaccountability in our day to day lives – maybe we’d remove our-selves rom various positions o authority beore we begin doingmore harm than good …Reecting on all those chil-dren, even that last one he didn’tsee coming, that have crossed thestreet saely at ages where thehazards o coming head to headwith an automobile are a distantconcern at best, Dangereld toldus, “I’ll be honest with you and allthe parents, I know what they say about kids but I have never seena real bad kid … i you show themsome respect, they’ll show it to you … Tey were my joy – whenthey make a mistake, you ain’t gotto uss at them, just make themunderstand.”Does he have any plans to helpoccupy his morning and ater-noon time blocks now that he isretired – again?“I’m going to watch DoctorPhil,” Dangereld replied with hischaracteristic deep and graciouslaugh.Sometimes the true humanroyalty among us go without no-tice – but I think a lot o us may miss that amiliar ace and com-orting presence in ront o RessieJeries or some time to come.
