Ressie Crossing Guard John Dangereld retires at 87 ater 21 years

Dangereld a-ter 1 years as the public schoolcrossing guard on Criser Roadin ront o Ressie Jeries El-ementary School. It was our Mr.Dangereld’s second retirement.His rst, he told us was rom a30-plus year career at AmericanViscose. In act his tenure there,ending at age 65, transcended allthree owners o what was or al-most 50 years the town’s majorprivate sector employer.But in September 011, Dan-gereld was getting his dues orhis post-Avtex retirement serviceto this community and its chil-dren.“He’s been looking over ourmost important asset – our chil-dren,” Mayor im Darr said in ac-knowledging a man he observedhe has known most o his lie.Darr said he rst encounteredDangereld when he did somework as a young man at Avtex, thenal incarnation o the AmericanViscose rayon manuacturingacility. – “But I never knew hislast name was Dangereld,” Darrsaid, adding a very respectul,“He’s a great man,” to the crossingguard’s retirement accolades.So, how does it eel to nally begetting some respect?” we asked,adding our two cents to a Rodney Dangereld reerence our ownMr. Dangereld has probably heard at least more than once toooten.“What do you mean? – I stilldon’t get none!” he replied witha good-natured laugh despite oureorts at a cheap one liner.Joking about his age – 87– Dangereld said one youngwoman – “She’s just as sweet asshe can be” – recently told him,“Pops, you’re older than Methu-selah.’“I said, ‘I am not.’ And she said,‘Well I know you are because youused to help me get across thestreet and now I have a baby inschool and you’re helping him gethome.’ ”So how many o his commu-nity’s youth does he think hehas helped homeward over thecourse o his second career as acrossing guard under the auspic-es o FRPD, we wondered.“A whole lot o them.”On a serious note, Dangereldsaid it was his age catching upwith him that led to his decisionto call it a day in ront o Ressie.“Tere comes a day in lie when you know you’ve made a mistakeand it’s your ault, so it’s time to
